  • Can anyone find Tony quotes from 1996?

I keep hearing some people in the media saying Tony George is doing everything he said he wouldnt do. For example, engine leases, foregin tracks, road courses.

Does anyone have any quotes from Tony from around 1996 that say he would not do any of these other things?

Not trying to start any debate (so please lets not get into one), I just cant find where he said that he wouldnt do these things.

I don't see any road courses on the schedule?

Tony was never against engine leasing - he was against MANDATORY engine leasing. Engine leasing has in fact been a part of the IRL from day one. He was against manufacturers selectively picking limited numbers of teams to supply engines to. He wanted any team to be able to get any engine they want, and as far as I can tell, that is the case.

This is my favorite, from CNN/SI, Aug. 6, 1999. AJ talks about Michigan:

"Things aren't very good on the CART side, either. Only about 50,000 -- a half-sellout -- showed up for its showcase U.S. 500 last month at Michigan Speedway.

Foyt can understand why fans are staying away, particularly in the kind of brutal weather that has gripped much of the nation this summer.

"Anybody who'd go sit in them aluminum stands has got to be a complete idiot," he said."

I guess AJ thinks IRL fans are idiots too.

Nahhh, what he meant was "Anybody who'd go sit in them aluminum stands and watch them CART guys race has got to be a complete idiot".**

When was A.J. ever known for choosing his words carefully ?

I tell you what, this year at MIS we had a decent breeze and cloud cover most of the day, otherwise we would have been baking. Last year we just about had it after a weekend of camping in the infield.

Hey 220, the links on Open Wheel News to the interviews of Tony haven't worked for some time now. Did these publications archive or (NOOOOOO!!! ) simply dump this stuff? If you could redirect us to these interviews, myself and, I'm sure, many others here would appreciate it greatly.

Thanks! And thanks for all you do for us web-addicted IRL fans!

If you read Tony George's letter to the editor, it is a great piece. Tons of interesting stuff.

You might try a Google search. They cache a lot of expired web pages.

Here you go. At least some of the links work.

Incidentally, loki posted some interesting TG quotes from the '96 Indy yearbook a couple of months ago. Search this forum for his posts, maybe you'll find it.

In a June 1996 Open Wheel Magazine issue, Bones Bourcier had a Q & A with both Tony George and Andrew Craig. Tony George said that he doesn't hate road courses or street circuits, he just doesn't think an out-breaking manuever is an exciting pass to watch. He said he likes ovals because they are faster and that for the most part, the fans can see all the action around the whole track. He says ovals are easier and less costly to produce for television, they draw a better TV rating. In response to a question about his desire to steer more American drivers toward Indy Cars, George said that he always wants to maintain an international flavor, but wants to keep Indy Car Racing mainly an American sport.

Andrew Craig also said that CART would love to have sprint and midget drivers in their series. He said that hopefully someday Tony Stewart will be good enough to graduate to CART.

It's amazing how many folks put their own words in those TG quotes. When you read them, they're not there. In fact, it's mysterous in fashion with it's accuracy to what we see today, as if he had a crystal ball.

Many journalist and figures have made themselves look like idiots when put against the backdrop of the actual TG quotes. Perhaps these psuedo reporters should conduct a little research before splattering egg on their faces with their keyboards.

I read that article right before I posted and if you look closely, I was not quoting anybody. Sorry, if I offended you.
