  • Cheever Tests in Vegas

LAS VEGAS –Indy Racing League owner and driver Eddie Cheever Jr. completed a two-day test at Las Vegas Motor Speedway today.

The one-time Indianapolis 500 winner (1998) chose to test at LVMS because of its similarity to Kentucky. The test was primarily to collect data and to acquaint new engineers prior to the Test in the West.

“We are testing Las Vegas because it is a great track, great facility,” Cheever said. “I look forward to the day that we come back here to race again. We are getting ready for our Test in the West, which will be Feb. 6. It starts in Fontana and continues to Phoenix.”

“We have been doing some engine development for Nissan and we tested some parts for Dallara. We are trying to get as much information as we can.”

In addition, Team Cheever was testing a new driver for the upcoming season.

“We are testing Tomas Scheckter, who is kind of an European hot shoe with Formula One aspirations,” Cheever said. Scheckter’s father, Jody, was a Formula One champion with Ferrari in 1979. “We have had a successful test,” Cheever said.

Why would you test anyone for an all-oval series that had F1 as his main goal?

Eddie we need to STOP the revolving door syndrome. The IRL has to become a destination series. Not a series that is a doorstep to somewhere else.
I would think by now that this administration would have a clue as to what it takes to get the job done. So, Get-er-done!!!!!

        From TSL

Cheever will make his announcement on his second driver on 2/1.
If the league is not going to shift their stance on the fees I would imagine all of the ovals would start being replaced by "chamber of commerce financially supported" TV infomercials dressed up like a car race for different city centers across the USA.

Something has to put food on the table. Tomas has to work, so he goes where the work is. Eddie has to feed the monster, so he probably charged Tomas for the test.

Not sure how much of an indication this is, but Scheckter (sp) posted a 210.7 which was over 2mph faster than 2000 pole sitter Mark Dismore's 208.5

Without other cars there, it's hard to compare, but given this is his first time in an Indy car, he seems to have adapted reasonably well.

              Infiniti rocks!
