Gil de Ferran missed a race, and still almost won a championship.
Why would any team owner want to participate in a non-points race? The fans paid for a real show, and they should get one.
In the past, the IRL has awarded last place points to teams that qualified, but didn't start the race. They'll probably do the same today. The "missing a race" storyline is a good one, but if they get last place points, the real impact on the championship won't be that huge.
Seems so cold and harsh, but you cant turn the death of a driver in a meaningless practice session into a meaningless race for the rest of the field. Life goes on, the race and the season should go on. Dana would have been racing had it happened to someone else - it's the way it should be.
It's seems logical. And Rusty Wallace has a tough job for his first show.
My thoughts too. I'd hate to be in Rusty's shoes on a day like today. But Rusty has been a racer for a long time. He knows that as much as we all hate it, this happens. We'll see in a few minutes.
RIP Paul Dana. We hardly got the chance to know you. But even that little bit showed me that you loved this sport. Your family teammates and friends will not mourn you alone.
