  • The 2006 Indy 500 Pace Car will be......

The 2006 Indy 500 Pace Car will be a Z06 Chevy Corvette, at least according to the souvenir catalog that I received today from the Speedway.

    Sorry, but no picture yet.

Isn't that the same make and model that was the pace car at this year's Daytona 500?

Honestly, I never thought I'd reach a day where I though....not another Corvette

        1979
        1986
        1995
        1998
        2002
        2004
        2005
        2006

Three years in a row and four out of five...me thinks that's a bit much. It's no longer a novelty.

Just asking, are you sure they didn't give you a 2005 book? They were still handing them out 2005's at the museum gift shops last month.
          Have attended: Indy 500 (36), Belle Island (3), Kentucky (4), St Pete (3), Homestead (1), Texas (2) Michigan (5), Cleveland (3), Iowa (6), Chicagoland (5), IRP (2), Eldora (3)...

            It's a 2006.

Got it in the mail today. The 2006 pace car is covered, but they do give a description of it.

They have some cool items for the 90th race in the catalog, like a starting line-up t-shirt....for the 1911 race.

...no offense Doc Indy but I think it's 1978, not 1979.

I agree with you in that it's no longer a big deal which is sad because I love Corvettes, especially the '06's.

I'm guessing there must have been some kind of 'deal' between IMS & Chevrolet as a Chevy has paced the field 6 times in the last 10 races....or 9 times in the last 15. Only 4 times in the last 20 years has the Pace Car been a make other than GM.

(no wonder Ford has no interest in the IRL! )

I owned 1986 and 1995 Vette pace cars and a 1990 parade car? That was the one that was light green and I forget what year it was........The 86 was junk but the 95 was pretty good. I have driven a new Z06 and it's prolly the best Corvette that has ever been made............. I'd buy one but I get tired of standing in front of judges...............

Toyota is the sponsor of the Hopmestead race and Toyota trucks were used by the Safety and fire teams at the test this last weekend. The Indy 500 is a complete seperate entity from the IRL................

Yup...simple mistype The '79 was that silver Mustang.

I've got an emblem from the '78 pace car...quite neat, as it was the 25th Anniversary Vette.

Personally, I love Corvettes and don't understand the problem with having another one. Sure beats getting some lame retro throwback minivan thing.

That said, I think the coolest car would be a Ford GT-40.

Last year I drove the 2005 coupe for a weekend and it was the best car I had ever driven, you wanted it to go there between that and that it went there and never touched that and that. You wanted it to go and you had power like you never felt from a production car before and as long as you could stand it. By far the best driving experience I had ever had.

This year I got to drive the Z06 for a weekend.

I might mature enough one day to own the coupe... the Z06? I'll never be that grown up.

Chevy probably made the best offer to IMS. The pace car package, as I understand it, is a form of sponsorship, so Chevy likely is willing to pay $$ to pace the '500' if not race in it.
