I loved all the races, but I am especially fond of the picture in all the national newspapers after the CART race was cancelled, The one of the guy holding the sign:
Chickens
Aren't
Racing
Today
In no way did I truly think the drivers wimped out, but that picture made me laugh. Of course, I was laughing all through the replay of "Grizzly Man" on the Discovery channel last night, so maybe it's just me...

Hornish wrapped up the 2001 title at Chicagoland
In 2002, it was the last year before Toyota and Honda came in and the engine battle was still in the makers.
Hornish, with Panther, was running a Speedway Chevy engine, the 2002 generation of the Chevy.
Castroneves, with Penske, was running his first full season of IndyCar Series. Penske was using the Ilmor Chevy engine. The 2002 Chevy was a little behind in development and the season started with some teams continuing to run the 2001 engine. By May, basically every team had switched to the 2002 generation though, except Penske who chose to give up some power for known consistency.
Winning the final race at Texas guaranteed Hornish the title, in the end though Castroneves could have won the race and Hornish the title as long as he did not drop a couple of more positions as Hornish beat Castroneves by 20 points.
This race also was Vitor Meira's first IndyCar race and he won the pole and finished third. He earned some respect late in the race when he showed maturity of not mixing up with Sam and Helio knowing they were battling for the season championship.

IMHO, 2001 finish was better than 2002, but it is not a voting option.
2002 is the greatest in Gossage's eyes only b/c it determined the title.
I voted 2002, Al Jr., and Texas Justice. One driver's "fuel strategy" is another driver's "speed up or we will park you!"

College Station Texas World Speedwat in 1971 when Buddy Baker crashed iinto the back end of James Hylton while leading the race, under the caution flag right, in front of the main grandstands.
Cotton Owens, owner of the Dodge Charger Buddy was driving, flashed Buddy a pit board, while Buudy was reading the board he crashed Hylton, the crash busted Buddy's radiator and put him out of the race.
The pit board said "BUDDY P1, EASY".

Interesting that when you click on the link to check ticket availability it only "defaults to the April Nascar race.
When you click the link for the June IRL races the info that comes up is 2005 info and dates. When you click on the link to search for individusl tickets, that page come up as unavailalbe. Thanks Eddie. Is he hoping the IRL fails?Have attended: Indy 500 (36), Belle Island (3), Kentucky (4), St Pete (3), Homestead (1), Texas (2) Michigan (5), Cleveland (3), Iowa (6), Chicagoland (5), IRP (2), Eldora (3)...

Dumb choices. Among the missing:
* 2000 June -- Scott Sharp and Robbie McGehee finish 1-2 separated by only a nose in one of the most exciting Indycar races ever seen.
* 1998 June -- Greg Ray takes it into the grass in a final-laps dual with winner Billy Boat.
* 2001 June -- Leaders Scott Sharp and Greg Ray duel it out in a breathtaking show of driver skill before Ray puts it into the wall. Many drivers complained about rough driving (coughCheeverCough), but this was some of the best edge-of-your-seat driving I've ever seen.
Also, I seem to remember a 3-wide-at-the-line finish involving Hornish -- anyone remember when/if that was?

Ahh, yeah. Horish's car had a big American flag on part of it, right?
