in a one-off for the Daytona 500. Maybe Danny-boy could win the Indy500, Rolex 24 and Daytona 500 all within a year. It's not as if Daytona is a difficult track to master. Good pub for the league too.

I'm not saying it's easy to win Daytona. Anytime you have to beat 42 other cars your odds aren't good. The fact is that it IS easy to stay on the lead lap there and if you have a fast car you can go from last to first in the last 20 laps.
IF there is a track that somebody could come in with little experience and compete for a win it is Daytona. My point is valid whether or not you like it.
One more fact you might be overlooking, that Wheldon kid, he's a pretty talented driver.

Why not Wheldon at Daytona
Not running for the Cup would give Dan a tiny boost.
But, I like what Mario said way back on going to Daytona. He essentialy said, 'There are times as a driver I did things to look good....to make a statement. I figured crashing out of the lead was better than finishing 2nd.
'So, we had a loose, fast qualifying set up & I said leave it. I either hang on to the thing for 500 miles or crash trying.'
He also said his pole in 1st F-1 appearance (Glen '68 i think), was another statement deal. He said he was going to do some 11/10ths laps & sit on the pole or walk back with a steering wheel in his hand.
Love that kind of stuff.
And, I'd love to see Dan give Daytona a shot.
Considering NASCAR is working on a higher international profile, Dan sure would get ink & TV on in the UK.
I could see NASCAR working to make that happen. (unless there are conflicts I'm unaware of.).

I like the idea of running open wheel guys in the Daytona 500 but its nowhere near as easy as you imply.Center Grove Trojans

I think the biggest thing that could hurt Dan-o is that rookie drivers tend to get "hazed" at Daytona. Unless you have a fairly fast car and its the end of the race and someone needs your help, he isn't going to get a lot of people that would help him. Being a one-off means he would have an uphill fight in qualifying. Don't get me wrong, if any one is up to the task, it's Dan. But, I just think it would be tough for him to walk in with zero stock car seat time and win the thing.
