  • Lees Inn on Lafayette Rd

We are getting too old to sleep in the car / tent the night before the race. Is this an acceptable place to stay? We realize it is the night before the 500, and we waited too long, so we are not expecting a whole lot.

Happy New Years, it will be May before you know it.

I've yet to see a Lee's Inn that I wouldn't put my family in.

    You should be safe.

I seem to remember that Domino's Pizza put up some of their guests at the Lee's Inn on Lafayette Road in 1990 when Luyendyk won the 500. I think it would still be a pretty good place to stay in May.

I have stayed there. It is a nice hotel. If memory serves right, it does not have a pool.

Used to work for the company during that time. It was a lot of fun. Sheirson Racing (Dominos) and other teams stayed there during the month for a few years (89-91?). Got to meet Arie several times, he still is one of my favorites. Probably one of the best sponsorship deals in history for a small Indiana company - Arie's winning car can be seen at the IMS museum from time to time with the Lees Inn name still on it.

Been a while, but their properties were always extra nice. Lafayette Rd. is only a couple of miles from the track.

At this stage since you don't have any ties to a certain place, I would hold off making a reservation because you are going to get hosed on the price. The last 5 or 6 years there have been plenty of rooms that like magic open up the week before the race for about half the cost you'll pay now.

I think if I had a choice I might try one of the hotels around the airport or anywhere near 465 rather than 5000 Lafayette Road. For instance, there is a Best Western at Rockville and High School that is right off of 465 and as close to IMS as 5000 Lafayette Road. Its in a safer neighborhood to pass through to get to IMS to boot.

                Holiday Inn at the Airport

For my $, the Holiday Inn at the airport is your best bet. But the night AFTER the race! (OK, so we used Priority Club points, so it really didn't cost us a penny.)

After almost 30 years of driving out from St. Louis and back home the same day, we finally decided to spend the night. Obviously they had no rooms the night before the race. But rooms that night were going at a discount!

Drove out that day, parked in their lot. Took IndyGo to the track - just walked right over to the bus stop from the hotel. And they droped us off at the same place.

                Really a good deal IMHO.

I stayed there for a regatta. It was clean and everything when I was there, so you should be alright.

                      Double check their cancelation policy.
If they will let you cancel fairly close to the date I would lock up the room now and see what opens up closer to date.
If the league is not going to shift their stance on the fees I would imagine all of the ovals would start being replaced by "chamber of commerce financially supported" TV infomercials dressed up like a car race for different city centers across the USA.

If you're used to a car or a tent, I wouldn't think ANY hotel would be unacceptable.

This Lee's Inn is right around the corner from the Casa de Lovehut lovingly known as The Snakepit's House. This Lee's Inn has history(With Arie) and it's close to I-65 and the track. You just pop down Georgetown, drive til the traffic gets tight, then just pull into someone's yard (usually 10 bucks), then hoof it the rest of the way. Perfect for turns 3 and 4. If you have seats on the south end of the track...it's a bit of a haul, though.

The suggestion that this is a bad neighborhood hurts the Snakepit to no end. I will gladly grill you a steak before the race and open the beer fridge (welcome race fans!). Not a rep for Lee's Inn, its just one of the very few things I know about.
