  • Jason Leffler Potential?

It is time for Leffler to come back to IndyCar Racing. He would be a good option for a 3rd Vision Car.
I was a little bit demoralized on the last laps, but I saw on the last lap that he was driving a little bit carefully, and I thought I might be able to surprise him. It was risky, but it worked." --Alex Zanardi, 09/08/96

    Another American couldn't hurt.

    USAC background a plus IMHO.

Why, has he become unemployed by virtue of abruptly losing yet another NASCAR ride?

Jason had a couple of IRL starts, and IIRC looked good for a rookie @ Indy. Steady all day and qualified pretty well.

I'm of the opinion that he's not talented enough. I think he's more of an open wheel driver than a tin-topper.

I also think that if Tony Stewart that got back into IRL ownership, he could pick Leffler and have an Indy 500 champion pretty quickly.

I'd like to see him in the IRL because he's a driver with talent. He did well in the trucks with a very good team the #2, he's had plenty of chances with Cup and Busch teams and didn't do much but those teams also didn't do much with the drivers that replaced him. I don't believe he would consider IndyCars because driving in NASCAR has become like baseball managing. There's a circle of people who get hired over and over whether they win or not, once you're in the circle you're in for a given amount of time and some job will come your way. Leffler is young enough but with experience so some owner will think he might be the one to break through and he'll be able to make enough money while he's in that circle.

SO he's stuck living in a "Groundhogs Day" situation in NASCAR? Bummer.

And it's probably the two main reasons he won't be on anyones radar in OW.

I could name several drivers that I would love to see in Indycars other then the never was Jason Leffler. There is a reason he keeps losing rides you know.

You didn't mention Penske backing, support, and the one Rick Mears spotting for him...

With all that, plus having a then-fast Treadway Racing putting him through his paces, I have to say his performance was a bit...underwhelming, given all the support behind him.

Maybe he needs one more shot to show his worth.

...but then again, how many can we say that about?

If there's a driver from the past I'd like to see get a second shot, it'd be Affonso Giaffone or Airton Dare...heck, throw in Jim Guthrie and Claude Bourbonnais...how's that for a blast from the past?

...and whatever happened to Laurent Redon?? Vincenzo Sospiri?

Jason makes an excelent living racing in NASCAR. He has a full season Busch ride for next year and has a pretty stout Midget in his own shop that he threw together and won Turkey Night with this year. He also is partners with Bud Kaeding in a USAC sprint team with Bud as the driver. He has the best of both worlds.

Old School - if your definition of a multi-time national champion is a never was than there are few drivers in this country that "ever were" I'd imagine.

unions - He's been hired for more rides than he has ever lost. And continues to be hired for rides for that matter. Maybe he isn't a "Cup" driver but he is still a good racer who people think enough of to pay him to race.

Leffler's biggest problem (besides being in over his head in NC) Is the fact that he's only loyal to Jason Leffler. He is the kind of guy who is never satisfied with what he has and is always sniffing around for another ride. He then drops the ride he has for the what he sees as his next big chance in NC. Screwed JGR some time ago in Busch (they had him in a development program) to prematurely go into Winston Cup with Ganassi, got fired from that big chance....Jimmy Smith then gave him a chance in the 2 truck.....screwed Smith over for his next big chance in NC. That team soon realized that he was not ready for NC and put him in a Busch car for a year or two....That was not good enough for him and he got his good friend Stewart to get him back with Gibbs where he started the season in the 11 car and promply got fired once again from a Cup ride....Leave him in NASCAR, that's where he wants to be....the IRL does not need him. I think he keeps getting rides in Cup because of Gordon, Kahne, Newman, Stewart, etc. and their success. The fact that he is still reasonably young and a former USAC champion gives (or did give) owners the idea that somehow he's miraculously going to turn into one of those guys in their car.....

PS. I might have left out a twist or turn or screw job here and there. There have been so many it is hard to keep track of them all....don't really want to actually, just happen to recall that much on short notice...
