  • OT: Prayers Please

I found out this morning that a close co-worker of my mine was killed last night in an accident on the Illinois Tollway. He was doing night-time work ont he pavement when a truck lost control and killed him. He was only 27 years old and was just a truly wonderful kid. He was married to his young wife on Oct. 1 of this year and found out 2 weeks later that they were expecting their first child. It is haunting in that I, and most of my other co-workers, realize that we put our lives in the public's hands everytime we step foot on the pavement and it could just as easily been one of us. I ask that you prayer for this young man's family as they go through this extremely difficult time in what should be a joyous season.

In his memory, please, please, please be attentive and careful when driving through work-zones on our roads and highways. Slow down and be cautious for workers. Remember that we are doing our best to be safe but without you, our effort are all for naught. Rushing through a construction zone may save you a minute or two but the consequences are immeasureable and affect real people. Please remember my co-worker when you approach road construction and slow down so that we might safely return to hug our love ones once again.

I can't think of a single valid excuse for anyone to ever lose control of a vehicle in a construction zone and fully support all the get tough laws that dramatically increase penalties for any traffic violation in them .....

these guys (and gals) don't get paid near enough to be constant targets

There's no "good" time for such a tragedy but there is certainly no worse time than right before the holidays (not to mention a young wife and a child on the way). What a shame.

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend and for the pain of his family and loved ones.

Here's an idea for a Christmas gift folks. Give the gift of consideration. Look out for your fellow man.

When driving through construction zones I sometimes worry about the workers while they perform their task, something bad has happened to the traffic situation in the US (and likely worldwide), due regard and attention has been eroding into selfishness and inattention. I wonder where one would go to find statistics on highway construction worker strikes?

                Ancedotal:

Late one night during my prior career in EMS something unbelieveable happened....we were moving a stretcher with patent off the shoulder and towards the awaiting helicopter idling on the highway, to divert traffic a deputy placed himself down the road, set up flares, and was waving traffic towards the exit ramp. One complete idiot drove right past him and sped under the helicopter blades!

My condolences Paul for losing a friend, he was too young.

                  Let me guess...cell phone??

I was out east working with a customer and heard about this...in a construction zone, the guy drives right into four workers...he was on his cell phone. Never saw them or the barricades.

A cyclist friend via the internet (this made our local news the other day) was riding and was hit by a teenager who was TEXT MESSAGING while driving and killed the guy...

I am very sorry to hear of the death of your friend, Paul...horrible...a few seconds of inattention...no excuse for that.

Cell phone, drunk, or just impatient. It was too dark to see and the car was going too fast.

The cell phone phenomina is a bigger threat to safety than any muscle car, Pinto, Audi 5000, or Corvair ever was. It appears that the actual act of driving is falling further and further down the scale of importance in the public's eye.

Sorry to hear about this. Totally senseless and inexcuseable.

Let us know if there's anything we can do.

Yes. The beauty of this one is we can give it year round. It never needs to stop.

Prayers for the young man's family.

Prayers for his family as well as to have drivers be more attentive, responsible, and aware of potential consequences for being in too much of a hurry.

Agreed. Killing a fellow human being is not worth the extra speed.

God Speed to that young man and to his family.
