  • Penske moving Indy Car Team to NC

Penske Racing is moving its headquarters next year, and also going back to Honda.

Indy-car racing's second-oldest team will leave Reading, Pa., after the 2006 Indy Racing League season concludes, relocating to the company's new NASCAR facility in Mooresville, N.C.

The move will allow the organization to consolidate its stock-car, Indy-car and sports-car teams in the 424,000-square-foot facility Roger Penske opened last year in the Charlotte suburb.

"There is certainly a lot of crossover capabilities," said Tim Cindric, the president of the team's Indy-car program. "Definitely one of the motives is to put everything under one roof."

Penske set his team's roots in Reading in 1973 after it spent its first seven seasons in Newtown Square, Pa., a suburb of Philadelphia.

Only A.J. Foyt Racing, which is now based in the Houston suburb of Waller, Texas, has stayed in one area longer. Foyt's team was founded in 1965 in Houston.

Penske's Indy-car team has about 90 employees, most of whom are Pennsylvania natives. Cindric doesn't know how many people will follow the team.

"It's one of those things where it depends what seat you're sitting in," he said. "A lot of people are from this area and don't want to leave. But there are people who are really looking forward to the opportunity of being in an environment where there are other racing (programs)."

Interesting that they would risk losing people by moving, also i always heard one of the reason that Penske was able to keep so many of his good employees was his tie in to some of the local tech schools and colleges and then the fact that there wasn't a bunch of teams like in Indy or Charlotte made people less likely to jump ship. So why move to a place with literally hundreds of race teams around ?

    Is it May yet ?
