  • Semi OT: old Indy photo I'd never seen before

I picked up an Indy 500 book at an antique store this weekend. This shot was in the book and like I mentioned, I've never seen this one before.

Is this a good or bad shot? Kind of bittersweet if you ask me.

    Tom Carnegie’s book?
Hated to see them go but it was time.
A shame they didn’t warehouse the doors and windows for resale but it’s a lot quicker and cheaper to just level things.

I'm pretty sure a lot of, if not all, of the doors were removed and either stored or taken as 'souvenirs' by teams, etc., prior to the demolition. It was fully-known during the month of May 1985 that the garages were going to be torn down and rebuilt after that year's race. However, it seemed to be a long time before we started seeing doors on display. I'm also sure that over the years, the doors would get worn out, and were replaced from time to time. The doors that were in place in May 1985 might not have been original-originals. Either way, most that survived were probably put away, stored for years, as it took a while for the sentiment and nostalgia for the old garages to rekindle.

Here's a nice little piece by Sam Posey about the tearing down and reconstruction of the garage area in from 1986....starts at the 20:30 mark

The video seems to show that the doors were taken off before the bulldozer finished off the buildings.

It's hard to believe, but the "new" garages will be 35 years old this May.

We were minutes away from the Garage Mahal. 😉

              Great place. We'll go back.

That's probably my favorite "Indy" book.
