  • Whose career/legacy was hurt most by the Split?

Not another “split” rant, but seeing a lot of Zanardi videos lately. Would have loved to see him and Moore at Indy.

anyone else impacted by those lost years?

Tony Kanaan would have been a sight, if he lived through the experience.

As easy as it is to pick guys like Zanardi and Moore.....I think guys that were in their prime in the mid 90's were the ones hurt the most. Michael and PT come to mind. Vasser would make that cut as well.

Michael Andretti might have won an Indy 500 or three.

I thought about Al. Unless the Split is actually blamed for his personal problems, maybe not. He wasn't much of a factor in CART after 1995, and was dropped after 1999. OTOH, talent and guts could put him over the line first at Indy if he managed to be close at the end.

Al came back to Indy with a top team in 2000, so he only lost half of those years at Indy.

PT says the 96--97 Penske chassis could have been good at Indy. It was very sensitive to ride height, so CART's road courses didn't suit it.

Who was that guy who ran a fictional CART/CCWS seasons on his website after they folded, and declared himself champion on several occasions?

                    That guy.

I'll say pretty much all the CART guys. Although the superior series from at least 1996-2001 (in fairness, the IRL got a lot better after the first couple years), there's no way history doesn't see missed 500s as the biggest negative impact.

Conversely, some guys got opportunities and made careers in the IRL they probably wouldn't have otherwise, so I don't think I can pick anyone from that side.

I guess the opposite is to ask whose legacy was helped the most by the split. I'll start with Buddy Lazier and Tony Stewart.
