  • Balloon Release

Recently, I was watching a couple of Indy 500 races at YouTube. When "Back Home In Indiana" is sung, the Speedway releases the balloons. I noticed that every year there is a different color combinations being released. Do the colors of the year have any significance?

I believe that they are usually the colors used in that particular year's event logo.

I actually went through most of the years...there’s a list at the bottom.

It was a rainbow of colors in most years until the early 90s, then it started being special combos of colors. But the color scheme doesn’t always follow a pattern. There’s been lots of red-white-blue years, and a couple times where the colors matched the color of that year’s logo (2006 comes to mind). But others, it just seems like it was what it was.

I remember 2011's black, orange and white was ... not great.

Yeah, me too. I would be happy if they just stayed with red, white and blue forever.

The balloons are one of the most lack luster, underwhelming traditions of the race. The number of balloons they release, compared to the size of the Speedway and size of the crowd are not impressive in any way. Combine that with the direct environmental impact the balloons have and count me as one of those who are ready for that tradition to end.
Be a better driver, move right except to pass.
