to my knowledge, devries hasn't even passed a rookie test yet. but that seems to matter little to the irl, car count not quality matters. but who really believes this guy and team will still be around after indy?

and as for diz's atlantic credentials, most of the races he won, he did so in an outdated swift against ralts...and he did win overall. there should be no questioning of his credentials now.

What the heck does Dr. Jack Miller have anything at all to do with bucky beaver joebob?
deVries won his championship as pretty much the only in a class for year old cars, and his team is hyping him as a past champion. I could only think of one other Indy Car driver who has done the same thing. That would be Dr. Jack. I thought it was useful context for de Vries's championship.

joebob: It should be noted that Dr. Jack Miller's Indy Lights "championship" came the same way. From Dr. Jack's bio on the IRL site: "1998(sic) Won March class championship in Firestone Indy Lights series. Owned team and car, winning six of 12 races in class. Best overall finish of 12th at Portland." IIRC, he was pretty much the only guy who ran that "class" that season.

Montoya's grandma is probably more qualified than DeVries.

Glad you asked. Carl has won in Southern All Stars and NASCAR All-Pro Late Models, not to mention numerous weekly late model shows. His biggest win was probably the '97 Pep Boys 200 at Bristol, the night before the Cup race. Others in the field that night included Hornaday, Kenseth, and Earnhardt Jr. Helluva race, I watched it on TV. He never contended for the season title because he never had the bucks to run all the races.

These days, he takes an old cast-off Petty car to a few Cup races a year, and typically qualifies in the top 30, while much more financed efforts go home. He drives for Mansion Motorsports, and is 1/2 of the total full time staff. He prepares the cars, and drives the hauler.

And, he's probably much more qualified to drive an Indy car than John DeVries.

    Next question?

I remember a vacuum cleaner salesman from my area bought a stock car and became a Winston Cup driver in the late seventies with no experience. What about this character Carl Long that is now in Winston Cup?

It's more likely that they need to be cooking up a big batch of carbon fiber.

Good point. He may end up sitting in the stands sharing a Milk Chug with Dr. Jack.

This joker wouldn't even get his license in CART. That is what the Pro Series is for.
Bear in mind, he hasn't got his license in IRL yet either.

    Yes, IMO.

Because If I started a race team because I am CEO of XYZ jelly and I didn't have $h!t for driving creditials I could understand all the doubts.

Lets get serious here. The IRL is supposed to be the major leagues. People die in racing every year.

This isn't like facing a 99 mph fastball.
And that is what it is. Baseball has these fantasy camps where rich old men can show up and play with the old timers.

The IRL has become racing's version of a fantasy camp where if you are rich enough you can show up and get on the track with Indy, IRL, and CART champions.

It's getting a bit stuffy on this thread.

Here's a team just starting out. The Braytons are known to be good people, the others are either unknowns or have reputations for less than savory conduct.

Oh, yes! We also have an unattributed statement by "Mr. Credibility" that doesn't seem to make sense, i.e., "DeVries won the 1998 formula Holden title..."

That's enough for me! Let's dump on these guys because they don't fit our paradigm of what a "proper" race team should be. We haven't even seen them on a racetrack, but already we can predict failure and problems!

I found that arrogance distasteful amongst CART elitist fans, and I'm distressed to see it starting here.

This team is testing on 31 January in Fontana. How about wishing them good luck, good racing, and see how they do?

    Is that asking too much?
