Lots of cardboard cutouts of fans..."But another icy Indiana winter will come and go and before we know it, springtime returns and it will be May and the roar of engines will once again breathe life into the lazy Hoosier sky and bring us back together." -- Sid Collins

Come to think about it, I bet Tony George doesn't need cardboard cutouts, when he can obviously afford Safe-T-Man, the mannequin designed for the passenger seats of single women."But another icy Indiana winter will come and go and before we know it, springtime returns and it will be May and the roar of engines will once again breathe life into the lazy Hoosier sky and bring us back together." -- Sid Collins

There were plenty of empty seats as well.
Of the seats with people actually in them:
How many ducats were season ticket packages?
How many freebies?
How many were sold as singles?
60%/20%/20% ??
20%/20%/60% ??
Any one know or have an educated guess?
You can paper the house all you want, it doesn't mean a crowd will show up. They gotta want to be there and there were plenty in the stands today.

Remember: Nashville may have been full, but it only seats 35,000 so attendance is no good. Texas had 86,000+, but it also is no good, beacuse the place holds many more. Discrediting the IRL sure is getting harder and harder this 2002 season!

I sent a few Scout's with families down to hold the cardboard cutouts.
Couldnt make it myself,,,,, didnt get back to OK from an hour north of Denver until late morning. Couldnt make it there for the green, and WAY TO TIRED to try to stay up another 9 hours."OWRS did not return phone calls."

This post kinda explains what I was getting at:
link
You're only in trouble when you paper the house and no one shows up.
For an open wheel event the size of the crowd was impressive -- whatever the official number.
Having Nascar fans help subsidize and populate the IRL race(s) has been (and continues to be) a good business decision. I have no problem with that. Bigger crowds look better, and if the product is good word of mouth spreads the news.
With the momentum of the last 2 races in particular and the way the series is moving in general, the percentage of single ticket sales will grow higher.
That being said I am still curious as to the percentages of actual paid walkup purchases vs. season ticket package and associated freebies. (see above link)

Do these IRL tickets that come as a part of a season ticket package include a feature hidden within them that reports you to the attendance overlords if you stay home and fail to use them?
I saw a lot of racefans out here today. The ones I saw and talked with sure didn't look like they had the fear of God on their faces. You know..... from having a gun to their heads in order that they show up."To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." (Theodore Roosevelt 1918)

Come on, haven't we all learned anything from Mista Bone, BADGER, sifaka, et al? It was all an optical illusion due to the side angle view of the stands on TV.I am sure that they will set all of us straight that head on shots and overhead views of the stands will reveal that there were only 15-20K actually in attendance.
