  • Indy needs a night race

This is why Indy needs a night race.

The place looks awesome at night. It would be cool to have a 24 Hours of Indianapolis sports car race. Maybe on Labor Day weekend to complement the action at IRP. That or the USGP at night.

4th of July would be better. Indy(the city) would then then have 3 big holiday events plus NASCAR and F-1.
    Preserving America's oval track tradition:
    1.New Hampshire, 2.Charlotte, 3.Dover, 4.Disney World, 5.Las Vegas, 6.Atlanta, 7.Gateway, 8.Nazereth, 9.Phoenix, 10.Fontana, 11.Pikes Peak, 12.Michigan.

Never though about the 4th. Would it be feasible to go from oval to RC to oval to RC in one year? Or do you move Brickyard to July and have the 24 hr race first weekend of August?

NASCAR has a big race in Daytona on the 4th. I don't see them moving that anywhere.

Bribe NASCAR, Indy's more important to most of the drivers anyway!

Lots of places look awesome at night.Times Square, the Lincoln Memorial, the Grand Canyon etc. and they don't have races. They're not even considering them. Many people think that three races at IMS is two too many. Why add more?A sports car race won't draw flies. There can be too much of a good thing.

OTH,why not quit fooling around and simply book a regular Saturday night midget show? That oughta pack 'em in.

A 24-Hours-At-Indy race would be a wonderful replacement for the USGP...

That said, seeing we're stuck with the USGP for now, make it the night race. It would be the only one in F1 that I'm aware of, present a unique challenge to the drivers, and jazz up an event in desperate need of jazzing up.

The city of Indianapolis has asked that the speedway never have a night event. They feel that getting a crowd that size in and out safely would be a very difficult task. A 24hr event might work because the crowds would not be as large. Not sure what the neighborhoods around the track would think of it though.

There you go, replace a boring, uncompetitive race with a boring, uncompetitive race that has a smaller following and lasts twelve times as long

With today's technology? Gearboxes wouldn't be a problem. I guess with quick change pistons the only problem would be finding a strong enough patch for the engine block.

wreck a car, no problem.....new front clip. New rear clip...new middle clip.

Transmittion fails....please. 3 min 47 seconds and back out.

                      Engine blows? 7 minutes

                      injure driver.....plug in another monkey

It could go on for years.

And, oh by the way....it has already happened. In 1992 at the Monza world sportscar championship opener. It was a short field of 8 cars or something and everyone broke except the toyota TS-10 and the remaining Peugeot 905. On the last lap, the Peugeot lost it's brakes, hit the gravel trap and landed on it's lid. The toyota took the flag as the last remaining runner.

Indy had a night race last Friday, out at IRP. Too bad if you missed it, what a great show.

As far as IMS goes, I have been to twelve 500s, and plan to see a bunch more before the dirt is shoveled.

Been to one BY400, and attended the USGP practice and qualifying last week. Neither event does a thing for me. A night race at the Speedway would be a dog with fleas.

The 86 Michigan 500 came close too - 6 1/2 cars running at the finish (Al Jr. was getting laps in a damaged car at half speed). Indy 87 had 7 cars running at the finish.... ahhh... the good old days

It is hard enough to find your car in a lighted parking lot after a night IRL event. I cannot imagine what it would be like for all those fans to wonder bcak through the neighborhoods around IMS looking for their car!

Shoot I have hard time with a race @ IMS which does not start at 11am.
If the league is not going to shift their stance on the fees I would imagine all of the ovals would start being replaced by "chamber of commerce financially supported" TV infomercials dressed up like a car race for different city centers across the USA.
