  • Could Scott Pruett make an Indy comeback?

Strange question but would Speedchannel let Scott Pruett make an INDY Qualification attempt in a possible 3rd Kelly car? I think Kelly was trying to put it together last year but it fell through the last minute. Would this be a conflict of interest? Do you think Scott would consider it?

    I hope not.

Pruett always struck me as a guy who would have been perfect for the IRL (if only because he's American), but he chose to align himself with CART instead. Was this because of connections to Pat Patrick or one of the other founders of CART?

Having said that, yeah, I think he could still be competitive. And I think SpeedChannel would understand.

        Why?
I've got sources. I used to know a T-Shirt vendor at the Phoenix track.

Hardly. Pruett was a fine road racer, particularly in Trans-Am and GT racing. He's also been a force in safety developments in Winston Cup - the Reynard seat that some teams are now running owes a lot of its development to the one Pruett brought to Daytona and had to take out.

It seemed to me like maybe Scott came to openwheel pretty late in his career, and perhaps wasn't that much of an openwheeler to begin with. I know he had a win (Michigan 500?), but he wasn't really ever a big time force.

If Kelley were going to run a third car, they could do worse, but they could definitely do better. If it came to that, I'd rather see Diz.

Kelley did try to work a deal with Pruett when he was still under contract with Cal Wells. That spoiled it. So this makes sense.

Scott arrived at a decent age: 28 By then he was quite ready to run Indy cars and was superb very quickly. He had a bad testing wreck in '90 that set him back. Then he ran for a third rate team at Indy and followed that up with some lost "competitive" time testing 'Stones. Somewhere in all of this he was brilliant in winning Michigan.

After that, he sort of got lost in the CART deck and is pretty much through as an open-wheel racer.

Take out the wreck and the testing time, replace that with a Menard-type ride and Scott may very well be on the Borg-Warner and a big name.

Sometimes it's just racing luck and how things turn out. There is a lot of talent you'll never hear about. Scott was one of them we at least go to get a glimpse of. When he was on, Scott was as good as anybody in the game.

Scott was an extremely good test driver and probably did more for Firestone and getting they're program up to speed than anyone. Usually qualified good but wasn't real racy.Quickly fell back to mid-pack in most races. I believe his Michigan victory was an attrition race. Too old now to consider.
