  • 2002 lineup

The Indystar has CART with a total of 20 drivers this year, the IRL with 30. I know that many CART venues have a contractual agreement that CART must provide a certain number of cars at their event. I would imagine that the recent adoption of the IRL specs is a hope to woo some of the IRL teams to CART events.

Let's hope we can add Jeff Ward in a
Ganassi car to the IRL list ...

Hard to believe that Ward is out there this late in the game. I hope he gets something good.

I cannot remember the last indycar event (other than Indy) where a driver/team was sent home for not making the field. If the 30 IRL drivers/teams listed are solid and then add Wardy and Jr. in the mix......this is gonna be a wild season.

I don't think anybody things there are 30 solid drivers/teams.

The last time somebody was sent home was Nazareth in 1995. There is only room for 26 starters, so Hiro Matsushita was sent home. After 1995, too many cars was never a problem.

Somebody want to jog JoeBob's Memory?
            Natural Born Cynic

What irks me (maybe its too soon for the truth), DW was a 16-oval WIN specialist, yet the vast majority those boohooing for him, hardcarders & fans, alike are the same ones trying to kill anything with more than 9 deg banking & 4 corners, where Dan ultimately made his home...

I think Jim Guthrie was sent home in Phoenix in 1998, and I believe we had non-qualifiers at WDW that same season.

                Yep.

I'll be surprised if 30 cars show up at Homestead, though.

I dont understand why they have Scott mayer
                  as the driver
                  he aint driving PDM's car.

                  Tyce or Diz prob will.

Either way, PDM will still have a car on the field. NUmber's filled, but I see your point. He made an assumption. Also, the list included Rocky Moran, who will only run up to Indy. It lists Beck Motorsports as well. Has Greg finally mad a deal with Shiggy and Epson?

To confirm and expand on some information in this thread:

Three cars did not qualify for the WDWS race in Jan. 1998.

Three additional cars did not qualify for the Phoenix race in March 1998.

A full field for those races was 28, and 31 cars were entered in both locations.
No weather forecasts are ever guaranteed, even if confidence level is high. Even a 99% probability will miss 1% of the time. That's the best anybody can do when predicting highly complex events.

Tyce has nothing except MAYBE an Indy only deal so far (as of TITW at Fontana). He told me he is still looking for a season deal.

These are really the cars that look solid with full intention of running 15 races with financing behind it:

                            Jaques Lazier
                            Helio Castroneves
                            Sam Hornish
                            Gil de Ferran
                            Scott Sharp
                            Eliseo Salazar
                            Buzz Calkins
                            Donnie Beechler
                            Jon Herb
                            Felipe Giaffone
                            Robbie Buhl
                            Laurent Redon
                            Alex Barron
                            Eddie Cheever Jr.
                            Buddy Lazier
                            Billy Boat
                            Athony Lazzaro
                            Greg Ray
                            2nd Cheever car
                            Billy Roe

Arie Luyendyk - not full schedule
Robby McGehee - waiting to see them on the track
                            Sarah Fisher - no money
Jon de Vries (R) - waiting to see the approval to run
Hideki Noda (R) - waiting to see the approval to run
Scott Mayer (R) - waiting to see the approval to run
                            Rick Treadway (R) - money?
George Mack (R) - waiting to see the approval to run

The IRL will have plenty of cars when it is all said and done but things are not as firm as what the star puts in print.

Disney World '99. 29 cars made qualifying runs for a field of '28. Andy Michner and Scott Harrington made the field on provisionals. The driver who was bumped out: Eliseo Salazar.
