  • Eddie Cheever on Open Wheel Racing in America

Since today seems to be Eddie Cheever day, here's an addition:

"The only reason you'd race in the states if you're an open-wheel race-car driver is to win Indy. Everything else means nothing. Everything else is either a warmup or a cool-down from Indy."
So, for all of you that saw him race anywhere other than Indy: That race meant nothing to him.

I'm sure the promoters just love to hear stuff like that.

I have a book at home titled Speed, and in it is a quote from Mario Andretti, stating that nothing is bigger than winning the Indy 500, he says something along the lines of; "The world could split in two, and if you have won Indy, it is still a great day".

Of course, this book is from 1984, so it doesn't have to worry about all of the politics of today.

It's a great book, you should get it.

As a matter of fact, I think that you could find quotes from every driver who has ever driven at Indy and they would say much the same thing.

They are called IndyCars for a reason.

Indy Car racing always has been about Indy, and always will be.

that is the reason we can say 1985 and someone says Spin and Win, but ask me who won the Portland GI Joe 200 in 1998 and it will be time to get out the intenet racing stats.

Most NBA players love the awards, but agree that the only thing that matters in the end is that title.

I think if I promoted Phoenix I would kind of understand the logic.

Isn't the whole idea of the other races on the schedule to offer you, The Fan, a chance to see the stars and cars of the Indy 500 at your track?

If it isn't then why do even races without a connection to Indy, like the one's in Canada and Australia, use the name "Indy"?

that's an utter fabrication. If you heard him talk abut jaguar after he clinched the world championship, you would know better. I'm not surprised.

I know one 10 year old who looks up to Eddie as a hero.

                My boy.

I still look up to these guys as heroes, same as when I was 10.

Uncle Fred used to say most folks who have to slam others do it to make themselves feel better or more important.

I feel sorry for "race fans" that somehow justify slamming these drivers. But I feel more sorry for the people who really know them and or have to live with them.

Yep. eddie was steady enough to sustain a Grand Prix career that lasted longer than an American in history. That's actaully quite an a-Cheever-ment.

Made a lot of money, travelled the world for years and years, drove the world's best and fastest cars, had loads of women (he was actually out getting some while losers on the internet slagged him off), and had the universal respect of the road racing community. He was so well respected, especially for being articulate and well-spoken, that he was selected to induct Ayrton Senna into the motorsports hall of fame.

Oh, it's too bad some "fans" can't give up their spite long to have a good time and enjoy the great characters when had the pleasure to observe. Everything is some sort of stupid party line. If motorpsorts is in decline, it is because of the "fans."

[QUOTE]Bruno Junquiera has achieved the same as Eddie Cheever in open wheel. Five wins. Indy may mean everything to you, but its not much more than the biggest race a year to me. Sure, its great to win it, but its certainly not life altering anymore. Add in Jimmy Vasser, Paul Tracy, and Adrian Fernandez, and you realize that you probably ripped your pants stretching for that joke.

Eddie was NOT one of the greats. He was a mid level driver, THE END. Give it up! Thats like arguing that Adrian was one of the greats. Sure, hes one heck of a driver and an awesome nice guy to boot... but he has never been as much of a force as other drivers at the time.

the people who are really unhappy with their own miserable failures of lives have really come out to tear down great champion. I hope that makes your own pitiful existances seem a little better.

Eddie won the 500. None of you losers can say the same thing about your own careers. Hey, did any of you ever even have a career?

Eddie did win the 500, didn't he ?

So since you're in "truth mode" there Doc, how about favoring us with your career stats driving at the Brickyard. Wouldn't want you to have a pitiful existance.

Hey, Nissan! Good to see ya.

I remember like yesterday when Nissan pulled the plug on it's new race fab shop in San Marcos. Boy, were those guys surprised!
