It has been 7 weeks since Tony Renna's death. Any updates on the investigation into the cause? Anything? Why is everything so quiet?

Also, has the IRL made any changes to their technical package for the 2003 season in response to this? Slow down the cars? Keep them from flying?

    What is going on here?

I have no intention of watching the 2004 IRL season if the series management "stands pat" on the technical regulations. We need to see action from Brian Barnhardt on this. I am will to give him time to come up with a solution, but we need to start seeing things happen now.

Why do "we" need to see something? I'm sure they are addressing issues, but really it's none of our business.

Personally, I'd rather they keep mum, do their investigation, and when they have all the facts, then make a statement.

As opposed to holding a press conference a mere few days later and blaming something they don't know for sure contributed to the accident or outcome.

BTW, I think there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes that we may or may not ever see.

My dad spoke to a former indy car driver who had spoke with some who were on the scene after the accident.

To keep it short, it was a darn good thing that this did not happen on race day, not from a concern to spectator injury but from the concern to the horror that would have been witnessed by those sitting nearby and the TV viewers. That is the only blessing in this entire thing, and a small one I realize.

I would think that in the future, they could easily have a dozen cameras taping action on the track, especially the turns, for this type of situation. With any crash it is good to have video. They have remote cameras on their website that the web user at home can manipulate, why couldn't they have more around the track for use by the speedway?

It would be nice to get any update, however small.

It was a private test. there were no cameras, there were no witnesses, the telemtry box was damaged. Did it ever occur to you that the IRL may never be able to deternine what happened?

TD and I were talking about this last Saturday. I would think cameras should be on during testing, and not necessarily for tragedies such as Renna. If I were testing, I'd want to be able to review laps on film - for instance, lap 22 was my quickest, did I take a different line? Whoops, yep, there it is, I clipped turn four just a little different - you get the idea.

I honestly don't know what the added cost would be, but I'd think it would be minimal in comparison to the other costs of testing.

Looking at the telemerty on the car will tell you what you did wrong during the lap. Yep, it will basically tell you that you clipped a turn.

The problem is in this instance that the telemetry is damaged so they got no info.

Cameras as a back up would be a good idea at all tracks, the thing is where to locate to insure that ya have good info in a case like this and how much does it cost. In IMS's case it wouldn't cost that much but other places it could get expensive.

However you come down on the rapidly evaporating "split", one cannot dispute that IMS has taken the lead in safety-related enhancements, especially the SAFER. It would a tremendous asset to the facility and participants to have a network of digital video cameras set up around the speedway. Even if they went to the kind of system that continuously saves the last period of time over the previous one, it could be a boon to accident investigations. That sort of system would have more limited value as a component of testing evaluation, but still would meet a need. Having such a set-up for Renna's test might have solved a number of unanswered questions (was he simply too low? did some suspension part fail?) and in a much less critical instance, imagine if this network of cameras had been active during the end of the 2002 Indy 500. Perhaps we wouldn't have had to live through the hoopla that surrounded the end of race. I know there were multiple cameras working the race, but maybe this safety network might have offered some additional confirmation one way or another.

It is our business as it is "we" that are sitting in the stands where parts are landing

EVERY RACE I've ever gone to has a disclaimer on the back of the ticket.

If you attend a racing event...the worst COULD happen.

If it bothers you, stay home.

I'll be in my seat at the exit of turn three regardless.
