This was supposed to be the breakout year
We added Toyota, Honda, advertising dollars, more top teams and drivers, had all the momentum going our way but yet TV ratings tanked big time and no noticable attendance changes overall. To go with that the racing was less exciting.

So if all that didn't help what will going foward?

I thought the racing was better, actually. So did a lot of the mainstream press and other media. Michigan may have been one of the best ever.

I think what's happening with attendance and ratings is that these things have a great deal of inertia, or negative momentum.

Just because there's a great race on TV, I don't expect people to tune in for that race. But over time, I think great races will tend to improve ratings and attendance. Moreso than anything else.

The racing was less exciting in your opinion. I don't see, IMO, how you could make that statement if you are not a fan of the IndyCar Series. I enjoy all forms of racing. The IRL easily has the most thrilling and exciting racing. The mainstream press agrees with me. However, I certainly don't need them to tell me that. In fact, I believe 2003 is the year the mainstream press finally realized what a great series the IRL is and stopped the negativity and bashing.

I thought the racing this year was just as exciting and even more competitive than the previous years. The 2004 season should be even more competitive now that the Chevy engine will be on par with Honda and Toyota at the start of the season. I can't wait.

The IRL has been growing every year in a positive fashion. I thought the series would have been more popular sooner, but that will take care of itself soon enough. The racing is just too good to miss. I do agree with Mr. George that the IndyCar Series will be more popular than NASCAR and F1. How could it not be? The racing is clearly better. And that's the truth.
