  • Homestead Banking Test

When the 2004 IndyCar schedule was released I recall the Star article stating that the new banking would be tested in October. I realize that recent events may have adjusted the priority of such a test. Is there any word on it or have I missed something?

    Thanks,

i'm sure some will be having a fit that the 'investigation' isn't complete.

there's nothing to investigate. a car hit a fence at 220 mph.

like the commercial says' what else to you need to know'

not trying to be callous here, but i'm reading comments that the irl should never turn another wheel. not here. somewhere else.

good for the irl for moving on. that's what racers do.

check out homesteadmiamispeedway.com for pics of the new banking.

      I can't wait .......

Nitro, I'd say the IRL needs to figure why the car got airborne and what can be done to help prevent this from happening in the future.....wouldn't be good if that happened again.

i agree , but on the other hand, i dont' see any comparison between driving into the relatively flat turns at indy, and the banked turns at homestead.

I'm not the least bit worried about it.

every other instance of a car flying this year has been caused by contact with debris or with another car.

yes they need to find out what happened, but you would think cars have been lifting off like aircraft for no reason the way some people are talking.

the new homestead is gonna be awesome.

              Not the worried part...but

On the Homestead topic I am wondering how an Indy Car will react to a variable degree banked track and what if any changes would have to me made to make it handle the best around a track like that? Does variable degree banking in the corners pose a porblem for an Indy car? Anyone know?

                That's what they are testing.

I'm sure they will be blindingly fast.

                        25 Laps not enough

Hornish, Scheckter, Dixon got about 25 laps. Rescheduled for Nov, 18,19,20 I think those are the dates.

Dave Brown said on AutoSport Radio that they did not have enough time to get up to speed so test was inconclusive.

                          "IRL tests at Homestead
IRL champion Scott Dixon and Tomas Scheckter tested Indy cars Monday at Homestead-Miami Speedway's newly-reshaped track and, according to witnesses, hit speeds approaching 220 mph on the 1.5-mile oval.

The new configuration features increased banking in the turns, from six degrees to 20, and thus the increase in speed. Tony Kanaan won the IRL pole position in 2003 at 203.5 mph.

For the third time in its history the track south of Miami was torn up to try and make NASCAR races more competitive.

The IRL opens its 2004 season at Homestead."

It didn't cause a problem in June of '97 at some track in Texas....
