  • So where is Jim Guthrie?

    Really. I'd like to know.

Here's a few more for the "where are they now?" experts:

    Racin Gardner
    Jim Buick
David Kudrave (used to watch him run Formula Russells out at Riverside)
    Stan Wattles
    John Hollansworth

    and, last but not least,

Robby Unser. Like Guthrie, Robby was, at one time, a legit IRL contender. Where is he now, and why isn't he still racing IndyCars?

    Racin Gardner for President.

All roads lead to Indy except for State Road 39 which goes to Martinsville.

"These cars are traveling faster than we can react" Eddie Sachs, race day 1964 (Indianapolis Times).

I could join the "Mile High Club" without ever leaving my home.

Now that's fascinating. Lots of interesting names on the contractors page, more than a few of which could easily handle an IndyCar. And then there's the VP, who I only just left off my list: Johnny Unser.

Here is another you left off your list.

As for Jim Gutherie. He is a businessman in Albuquerque. I last talked to him in '99. He was showing off the scars from his 98 Indy crash.

Double O Joe. How quickly we forget. And still winning, I see.

            This is better:

"It was actually fun, because you're back fully driving again in these trucks. Ninety percent of the tracks we go to in the IRL, you're flat-out. I was having to lift off the corners some here." - Buddy Rice

This was the latest I could find on Stan. Some good personal info.

                Racin Gardner

The May issue of RACER had a retrospective article on the '96 Indy/US 500's, with brand new, brief interviews with many of the principals. One of those featured on the IRL side was Mr. Gardner.

Racin Gardner owns and runs Blade Productions, the world's largest drive experience, in Southern California.
No mention of his role with PDI.

Besides PDI, with which he has been with since before his CART days, JU is increasingly busy with his role as Cooper Tires performance advisor.

He did promo work for them at the CART Mid-Ohio weekend and is heading off to do a similar gig for them in Mexico next month - I assume in conjunction with the Mexico City CART race.

As for Robby, he was trying to get a Craftsman Trucks deal earlier in the year but apparently has turned his interest to SCCA Pro Rally instead, with similar lack of results.

One Sat night last year I went to a local track in ABQ. Little Al's legends car was running. It was an off weekend for the IRL and both Al and Robbie were there in the pits working on the car. (As I recall they were argueing about the set up).

Also there that night was Mike Mosley Jr driving a legends car.

The sprint car points leader was Gary Armentroutt who was on AUJ's 92 Indy winning pit crew.

                      Who was driving?

And by "local track in ABQ," I assume you don't mean Speedway Park? Does that facility still exist (a quick search indicates it was last used in the 70's)?

Speedway Park is now a Wal Mart parking lot.

I went to Sandia Speedway. I'm trying to think of the Unser car's driver. He was another former Unser crew member. He campaigned there all year.

                          How about Paul Durant?

                            And Bronco Brad Murphey?

And Rob Wilson (Barber SAAB vet & JU's teammate at Project Indy for May '96)?

                            And Zak Morioka?

                            And Allen May?

                            And Juan Carlos Carbonell?

                            And most recently, Doug Didero?

Well, Wilson must be in his 50s by now. Still races in sportscars, winner in British GTs a coupla years back.

OK, hot shots, pop quiz: Wilson was the guitarist for which group that hit number 1 in Britain in 1970?
