Every time an IRL race comes on my 8 year old son runs into his room and grabs his number 4 penzoil panther race car and screams daddy daddy Sam Hornish Jr. is racing today. He will always be his favorite driver, and man that makes me feel pretty good. I dont care what anybody thinks but Sam is as close to a living legend in Indy car racing as you can get. If the dude can win Indy, and stay out of thosestock cars (exept for Daytona like A.J., and Mario) he will surpass all of the drivers who left Indy cars for NASCAR because the IRL is on its way up baby, and future legends like Sam Hornish who says Indy cars are were he wants to be just makes me feel good. My son is going to go nuts watching the Texas race, and I cant wait to watch it with him. Go getem open wheelers

Sounds like you have some sweet kids!
But I was thinking, we may have some more "sophisticated" words, but I have the same sentiments as your two year old when there is a crash.
And to the topic of this thread, I'm with you IRLCREW!

Just this morning, I was wondering what it would take for the TV ratings to go higher. If Hornish continues to race in the IRL for about ten years, and other young hotshoes, preferably Americans, and if you all continue to raise your kids properly, the ratings could go much higher. Keeping drivers in the series is what will help ratings. I hope the money will be there for the drivers to stay.

If Sammy does go to the Taxi Cabs which my 8 year old calls them then he will not be his hero anymore. It is so funny to here him say how slow those cars are going compared to our Indy cars. And now he wants me to get him a Kart so he can start racing. I figure he should be ready for Indy by time he is 20 so I have about 12 years to raise approx. 20 some mil for one car. Man could you just imagine your son on the Bourg Warner trophy? I dont if I spelled it corectly oh well go getem open wheelers

Sam has made his intentions clear; he wants to stay with Panther and get a contract extension.
If he sells out to a series where much of his talent will go to waste (racing wise that is, touching and banging with no repercusions and 40mph + slower) I will agree: he is no longer a hero.
For now, Sam's word is good enough for me. And I will not underestimate the financial power of the IMS to keep him in the IRL.Get your head out of your past!!!

I bought my 2 year old and her cousin Racing for Kids t-shirts at KC last year. I also got one of the little #24 cars that she plays with. She wants to know the name of everybody, so when I told her the person who drives that car it Robbie, she started calling it Robbie the Racecar, which she also calls him on TV (though that has been harder this year). She knows Sarah's car, Sam, Scott, Al, Eddie/Buddy & Gil/Helio(not able to differenciate), and she has had a heck of a time keeping up with the Menard car. Since she met one of the spotters at one point, everytime she hears any team communication, she asks if that's him.
Despite the avalanche of toys we have added since Robbie the Racecar joined our household, she still know where he is at any given moment, or the world stops til she can find him. (she has learned to extend bed time on occasion to make she RtR is bedside.) The younger daughter should be ready for learning for '03.
Enjoy the Racing - with the family!!
