  • I'm Back!

Sorry I haven't been able to contribute. I live in the Speedway neighborhood that has been the focus of all the news attention with the flash flooding. We were lucky in that we only got a little more than 3 feet of water in our basement - just enough to drown our furnace, water heater, washer, dryer, and refrigerator.

I have to go bleach my basement! Everyone have a better weekend than I will have!

Joe, please be careful with the bleach, get a lot of ventilation, use fans directed in and out, rent a outside air sorce if you can, with a mask. That stuff will burn your lungs, if you start coughing, get out.

      Been there!

We need a breath of fresh short-track air around here.
        Sorry about the basement flooding

        Out here in the desert
we have no basements to flood

The only thing that goes under the house is dead bodys

Somehow we got lucky. It seems every basement in our neighborhood got flooded except ours.

          Sorry to hear it ProJoe.

Wow! Your summer from he!! continues, Prof. Sounds like you are getting around a lot better though.

Sorry about the trouble you've had with the flooding and hope you get everything resolved in short order.

What others said about the bleach. Careful.

                Bleach.

Quick story, in '80 we decided to move from Northern Kentucky to St Pete, Florida, and went down, signed a contract on a house, and secured financing. Three months later, after school was over, we arrived on a Thursday AM for a Friday "closing." We went to the house, hoping to get early started on a 24-hour "clean and paint," the mover was scheduled to arrive Saturday at noon. Knock on the door, daughter answers, shock on her face, panic in her voice, "Mom, they're hear!" The "former" home owner comes to the door, steps out and closes it, "we changed our mind and decided not to sell." I did well, for me, I didn't hit her. I said, "I have 4 hungry kids in the van, all under 10, we are going to find a place to eat, I suggest you call your realtor, and a lawyer. I will be back in two hours, the closing is at 10:00 AM tomorrow, you have to be out of the house by then, get busy. She went in and slammed the door. Before eating, I called the realtor, who said, "she can't do that." When I went back to the house they were moving things out and into the driveway, and were apologetic.

When I went through the house to buy, it was visitor-ready, 3 months later, it was a mess. After the closing, I attacked both bathrooms, armed with all kinds of products that didn't like each other, mostly containing bleach, I was choking to death. With no time, I toughed out. They wanted to take me to the hospital, I wouldn't go, no time. To this day, I can't use bleach, or get a whiff of it.

                    PJ,

I went through a version of your story two years ago after Tropical Storm Allison put 3+ feet of water in my house and garage. You don't need full strength bleach. Dilute it with some water and get a pump-up sprayer and get busy. Good ventilation is still a plus and the fans will help dry the place up too. Good Luck!

                      Aloha Mr. Mackie,,,,

Dangerous crap, for "over the counter" stuff... Chlorine Gas,,, in a bottle,,, that will combine with almost all other elements.... It's a killer.... Then when you "MIX" it,,,, watch out... But boy does it work... Use to use it on our fishing boat,,,, out at sea,,, on the way in.... Mucho Cleano,,,,,

I never had any "flood damage",,, but have had a couple of fires.... Not sure what's worse,,, at least with a fire,,,, the clean up is simple.... I just wonder,,, maybe it's less painful, in a fire,,, you get it all at once, it's all over,,, ashes,,, simple.... I watch the flood damage on TV,,, wow ,,,, not good....
                      Yes,,, Yes,,, Tony,,,

Hey Professor Joe, sorry to hear that has happened. We had some flooding down here in Greenwood too. Ruined the kitchen and bedroom. Do you need any help at your place this weekend? I'm free both days I think.

You know, we live just north of the Greenwood area and believe it or not ...our sump pump hasn't even kicked on once. We must have been in the eye of the storm or something....

Know what you are going through Professor Joe.....We have had our finished lower level flooded in the past. What a mess AND expense not covered by insurance btw......Ended up having the floor in the lower level jackhammered and tile laid under the floor to waterproof...Another mess and expense but worth it in the long run.
