  • Car Count for 2004

With everything that has gone on this week, and silly season definitely has begun, I'm wondering how many cars will answer the bell in March in Homestead.

I'm thinking a solid 26 cars for next year with as much as 30 at Michigan, Fontana, and both Texas races. Any comment?

First, I hope they actually show in February when the event is scheduled

Second, I can remember going through this routine last year. Many of us were convinced that there would be big car counts and the closer it got to the start of the season, the more bleak it looked. I like to be optimistic, but I'm not going to speculate this year (well, at least not publicly....ok, maybe I WILL because when it comes down to it, I'm a junkie).

      Economy is still pretty shaky.

Add a couple, subtract a couple.

If CART folds, add 4-5 from there.

      I don't expect a HUGE jump.

26 every race would make a LOT of people happy (specifically those 5 driver's that now have full time employment).

Honestly, I can only see 17 at this point. Sure, there will be more if some of the rumors are true (2nd Panther car, 2nd Cheever car, etc.). I DO like the fact that announcements are being made much earlier this year.

I'll go out on a limb and predict 33 cars for Indy.

Two cars next year; Vitor, and Chicago's driver.
The transformation is complete. The Indy 500 is the only IndyCar race that matters.

Right. Just like the 34 the IRL said there would be this year. Car count is down to 19 right now -- CART territory. To get 26, CART would have to fold, and I'm still not sure there'd be 26.

I think I will wait until the TiTW before speculating on this subject.

                            2004 car count?

                            Less than Nascar.
