  • Vegas Columnist - "Get a deal done (Get an IRL race date inked)"

Now is the time for the speedway (LVMS)-- for once -- to invest in the future and do what it takes to land an IRL date for 2005. The speedway should not gamble on waiting until the middle of next year.

It's likely our local track will drag its executive heels until the last minute in 2004 to put together a date for 2005. By then, CART will be dead and the IRL will be courted by circuits in North America and Mexico that want to replace CART races.

Fans at IRL races in Kentucky, Illinois, Wisconsin, Colorado, Kansas and Michigan could be entertained with free concerts featuring Las Vegas acts. Send a showgirl and an Elvis impersonator to distribute Las Vegas race and hotel information to potential tourists.
Las Vegas Review Journal columnist Jeff Wolf is thinking ahead in this column from Friday's paper.

What a great idea. Promotion of an IRL race. If all of the promoters and the IRL brain trust thought like this guy we would probably be complaining about having to deal with sell out crowds at the races and taliking about the good old days when we were the only ones there.

Withour delay send the showgirl to all the IRL races, as a matter of fact keep the Elvis impersonator and send more showgirls.

It doesn't seem strange that there is a newspaper reporter interested in the IRL but actually advocating that a track get an IRL date. This may be one of the turning points in IRL history.

Of course the problem is the track management can't seem to come to an agreement with Tony George and since this reporter would get in free there's the issue for the track of how many tickets they could hope to sell. Once he solves that one
"You can't arrest those guys, they're folk heroes"
        "They're criminals"
"Well most folk heroes started out as criminals"
