  • IRL/NASCAR Doubleheader at INDY

With no fall date now is it impossible to think that there could be a NASCAR/IRL double header on the road course.

If the IRL is going road racing why not at Indy and
if NASCAR is thinking about more road races why not Indy.

A double header would take care of any crowd concerns and would instantly make it one of the biggest racing weekends in racing.

Also even if the USGP leaves Indy they would still have the three biggest racing events in the world.

    Any thoughts?

NASCAR has enough trouble trying to look fast on the oval. Just think how slow they'll be on the road course.
No weather forecasts are ever guaranteed, even if confidence level is high. Even a 99% probability will miss 1% of the time. That's the best anybody can do when predicting highly complex events.

They could call it the Indiana Superprix and have a rock concert at halftime.

        Don't jinx it man!

        Other than that, sounds great.

        One Suggestion:

NASCAR on Saturday, IndyCar on Sunday

The IRL must be the main show since we're talking Indy here.
Put NASCAR with the IPS on the Saturday Undercard.
        - Make a note of the word 'Gobbly-gook'. I like it and I want to use it more often in conversation.

...well if you like rumors, here's a good one that surfaced at IMS over the week-end.

Rumor: By 2005 or 2006 IMS will hold 5 major racing events a season.

One of the additions is rumored to be an Indycar season-ending Championship race held at IMS, perhaps the road-course.

I know, I know, it's just a rumor and I generally put little stock into them, but that's what was circulated anyway. The funny thing is, I heard it from 2 different people this week-end both with 'connections' to IMS.

An IndyCar race on the IMS road course would be cool. But please, no more NASCAR races at Indy.

There will be nothing in Fall of 2004 as Tony need to resurface the track and it could not be done if USGP was still at the end of Sept.

There's already too much dilluting of the hallowed gounds of IMS - no more races!

I mentioned this in another thread.... would the oval at IRP be a good second Indy venue for IndyCars? I don't know enough about it, but it looks like another "bull ring."
One driver's "fuel strategy" is another driver's "speed up or we will park you!"

...perhaps for the IPS cars, no way for Indycars.

                        It's just too small...only 5/8 mile track.

The IRP Oval is most definitely a 'bull-ring' too, USAC midget & sprint races, NASCAR Trucks & NASCAR Busch races are some of the best in racing.

How about five Indianapolis 500's each year and get rid of the BY400 and USGP?

Just kidding, but I sure do enjoy the 500.

Do you suppose there is any connection here?

NASCAR has growing ratings, crowds, populatiry, etc. Is not afraid to dump tradition to make a buck. During Speed Week at the Daytona 500 they have a different race just about ever day.

IMS/IRL has dwindling ratings, lower crowds (or at least that's what we are told) and refuses to budge on tradition. If they even think of adding a race at the IMS people go ballistic.

I’ve been to every racing event at the speedway since 1968.
I love the Indy 500 there is no race anywhere like it.
I really don’t understand why people think that the 500 should be the only race there.
It was built as a testing track it had various races including balloon races airplane races and various length auto races and it was used as an airport in the war.

                              Indy in 1909

Churchill Downs has races all year and several on Derby Day but
there is only one KY Derby

                              Same is true at Daytona

                              Also the Rose Bowl

Why would someone put forth a enormous investment and get returns one race a year.

Sure the BY 400 is a good race but it’s not the 500 neither is the USGP but it’s nice to have them.
I personally would like to see endurance racing, bikes etc.

If you want The 500 the only event just attend that one event only,
but people you need to look at things rationally if they race
at 16th and Georgetown 365 days a year
there will be still only one Indianapolis 500
