  • New forum needed

It has become apparent that Track Forum needs a new fourm. It should be called the Indy 500, for those who want to discuss the Indy 500, that apparently, according to many here, ceased to exist after 1995.

At one time I thought that the IRL and the Indy 500 were inexorably linked, but time and time again I read here on the IRL Forum where the excuse is given "The IRL is only 6 years old". Thus, anyone who reads this forum is left to deduce that the Indy 500 prior to 1996 has nothing to do with the IRL.

Maybe that fellow on the Speednet Forum who called himself "Last_500_was_1995" had a point.

Do you feel responsible for what somebody else posts? Probably not, then why do you think that the majority of us IRL supporters should be responsible for or answer to, the few who post the "only ??? years old" stuff? Quite truthfully, when I read your post, at first I thought that you had decided to post something after having a large quantity of alcoholic beverages, it made just about that much sense.

Many of those same newbile posters have only been fans during the last six years either due to their young age, or recent interest in OW racing.

Incidently, how many Indy 500's have you attended LeeRoy? No slam, just point to the diversity of the posters (I would have said fans, but that is not reality here either).

What irks me (maybe its too soon for the truth), DW was a 16-oval WIN specialist, yet the vast majority those boohooing for him, hardcarders & fans, alike are the same ones trying to kill anything with more than 9 deg banking & 4 corners, where Dan ultimately made his home...

Here is where people get confused. The IRL did not branch off from the Indy 500. It is based off the philosophy of the Indy 500, but in most areas it spun off from CART. When the IRL started, it used CART cars and CART engines. To get started the IRL needed to look to CART teams. For drivers the IRL had to look at CART drivers. For their future drivers the IRL needed to look at CART's feeder series'. In 1996 the IRL needed to look to CART's pipeline to get started. In the last 5 years the IRL has done many things to build their own pipeline, but they still have a way to go.
"IRL" ... what IS that anyway?

And in 2002 and 2003 the IRL is still counting on CART teams to give them well funded professional OW teams. If not, why the salivation at Penske coming to the IRL and the rampant rumors of TCGR and Green coming over.

The last six years have been a holding action. 2003 will be when this shakes out and it should be interesting.

Yes sif, it will all shake out in the 2003 1 race season.

Did you ever think that people were happy about Penske leaving CART more than they were about Penske coming to the IRL?

The trasdition of the Indy 500 goes back a long way, but the business of the IRL only goes back 6 years. That's not a political position, and it's not symbolic allegory, it's just a simple fact.

In all honesty, wouldn't you be happy if Buddy Lazier, Ralf Schumaker, and Dale Earnhardt Jr moved over to CART?

Well, the water is a little shallow to dive in but since the topic had "New forum needed" in it. Thanks to doitagain and Turn13, & rev-ed for getting us powered back up around here. Considering the aggrevation and expense necessary to keep this vessel afloat, I think a few 'attaboy(s)' are overdue. It's a privelege to have access to TF! Thanks!

I would describe it as an evolutionary action. Some of us could see it happening...

Nope. Never been to one. I may try next year. My personal situation keeps me from attending all of the races that I would like to.

My whole point of this thread is: How can someone make the excuse for the IRL's situation (which now is getting better year by year) when it is built on what is arguably the greatest race in the world?? The IRL is standing on the shoulders of giants.
