The headline was a bit misleading. It should have read "Why Tim Cindric wants Montoya".

man or not this is telling about what the Captain is thinking

even though Penske doesn't yet have a single sponsor to help finance Montoya's car for even one race.

He didn't have the sponsors for the 2 car so he let Briscoe go saying he wasn't going to fund a third car out of his pocket. Now he's willing to sign Montoya and either pay for it or he thinks he can get a sponsor between now and next season. Loyalty to Briscoe, who won some races and the Indy pole, wasn't enough to keep him in the 2 so you almost have to think Roger feels Montoya can win more races, maybe Indy and contend for a championship. Because Penske hasn't done things without a sure sponsor in the past.

I wonder if Penske thinks Montoya will be more able to attract a sponsor than others he could have signed.

I've bolded the actual reason. Even in a stock car, Montoya was fast at Indy.

What does Montoya have that Briscoe does not? His face on THE Borg Warner trophy.

With all due respect...what realistic/ potential IndyCar driver would be more attractive?

I think the piece of the puzzle we are all missing is Allmendinger. I think they were leaning toward him running IndyCar for the team, but when he signed with JTG Daugherty in NASCAR, the seat opened up.

Well maybe not Chipper, he didn't see fit to transfer him to the open wheel division of Chipper Racing.

Montoya is solid, I'm excited to see him back.

but.....2 wins in 8 years in NASCAR, and 7 wins in 6 years in F1....

thats 9 wins in the last 14 seasons. Truthfully I'm expecting him to be behind Will, Helio, Dario, Dixie, Simon, RHR, Hinch

i expect him to be in the 9-12 spots at most races, with a couple shots at wins at best

Yeah, but you know he's going to be one of the favorites in Indianapolis.

I doubt he will be funding this out of pocket by the time next year rolls around. He has plenty of time to find a sponser, and a good selling point to them as well. Brisco isn't quite as well known as Montoya. With Montoya, you have the whole "the attention will be on him because he was a popular nascar driver" pitch to make to the sponsor.

Was it just me or did the Times article NOT answer the question that it asked in it's headline?

IF Montoya ever had a top ride in NASCAR, I think his results would have been much and he would have found Victory Lane more often. Ganassi has never been considered a top ride in Cup, JPM was the only driver to ever get the team into the Chase. Bottom line is, from F3000, CART, I500 and F1, Montoya was one of the best open-wheel drivers ever and always a constant threat to win every race and I think Penske's record speaks for itself at the I500. Hell, Helio is 'finally' position to win his first IndyCar title. Montoya at Penske = win, win for everyone...:izod2
