  • Now everybody wants two scoops

IndyCar boss Mark Miles has one concern about the doubleheader format being used at three venues this season: The success of them in Detroit (June 1-2) and Toronto (July 13-14) will lead to requests from promoters with single races.

Include Kevin Savoree in that group. He and partner Kim Green promote three IndyCar races — St. Petersburg, Toronto and Mid-Ohio — and they want a doubleheader at St. Petersburg.

“It would be a heck of a way to open the season there,” Savoree said. “It would be the 10th (consecutive) year of the event, just a great way to celebrate IndyCar racing at the start of the season.”
Road racing is doomed...what this country needs is a big new racetrack designed for automobiles instead of horses. C.G. Fisher

I'll take St. Pete. Great way to start the season.

I was for these at first but now I think it's a last ditch effort to fill empty race days with track action - mosting since the supporting show is basically null.

We need to add double headers at the ovals or find more ovals. I'd also prefer to see additional natural terrain courses added. The schedule is already over balanced with street circuits. Adding more lowers the diversity necessary to win a championship in the series.

Since I go to St. Pete, I will selfishly take a second race down there. Insert evil laugh, since it contradicts my above statement.

Honestly though, I'd still like to see more natural terrain circuits and ovals added before additional street circuits.

Especially St. pete then. It was a more justifiable trip when ALMS was on the ticket. Sunshine and palm trees in March while the rest of the country is frozen. I agree, it is only filler material. But the start to the season when everyone is real hungry for anything, then feed them the filler. That makes sense, if they have to do it. It makes the expense and hassle of travel more appealing. Green Savoree will have their way.

Indy Lights has been a downer this year with so few entries. In some cases F2000 has been light on entries. Let's see what Dan A can do with Indy Lights entries in 2014.

However, when World Challenge is paired with IndyCars, it's anything but dull (null) or filler...IMO

Absolutely IndyCar needs more flat ovals, but the ones they have are top quality, I'll take one every other year if it means Phoenix, Loudon, and Richmond. The Natural terrain situation makes me sicker than the oval / street situations combined. They need real roadcourses. RA and Laguna. Heck, I never dreamed Pocono would be back. That has been the biggest gift I can remember. Keep dreaming.

I love the double headers. Can't wait for an Indy 500 double header - two Indy 500s in two days!!!

The doubleheaders have worked so far so why not make St. Pete a double header? I would think that a doubleheader at Brazil would bring more bang to the buck in terms of travel costs and time. I bet Brazil would sell out both races.

Just out of curiosity...somthing that just dawned on me and I am only quoting your post because you mention Road America. In past threads, someone mentions COTA and people go crazy because adding another race to the same region would be a bad idea. However, isn't Elkhart Lake only a little more than a stone's throw away from Milwaukee? That would be adding another race to the same region. Yet it seems to be a very favorable response all around.

Sounds like it's more of the "living in the past," thinking and wanting things to be what they used to be and not so much too many races in one area of the country.

For the record, I support Road America and COTA and would love to see them race in both places. However my fear is that ovals are soon going to be a thing of the past and soon we'll have a 15/3 split or something like that if they keep adding street/road courses. Honestly think Indycar should be looking to add an oval or two over throwing a street circuit another double header.

                        Just thinking out loud.

I have seen some (poorly translated) web snippets out of Brazil that the Sao Paulo race might not even happen next year.

I see where you're going but I think there's a point missing. Add COTA to the calender would mean THREE races at THREE different venues in one state. There weren't too many complaints when TMS and Houston had their different venues (though there were three races total) but adding a third Texas races would be too much. A forum member asked which races fans would favor and outside of all three the next two favored two out of three. So it's not a double standard or "living in the past" it's about favoring a certain region or state too much. Trust me if Wisconsin had an option of three races I think many members on here would think that's too much as well.

As for other street courses wanting to do a double - I think what we have is enough. The drivers seem to do them for the fans but do not like them personally and it's probably just as hard if not harder on the rest of the team as well. We must also consider the condition of the teams and not the enjoyment of the fans.
