(Sorry for the late thread folks. Didnt get to a computer til now + a busy schedule the last 24 hours)
1. What a mega weekend for Scott "the Iceman" Dixon. What a stunning performance. The one stint that absolutely amazed me was when he pulled the 11+ second gap on Helio and 20+ second gap on 3rd place Will Power. Hell he pitted from the lead and still came out ahead of Power in 3rd who stayed out. Impressive stuff. Scott has raced his way back into this title race in 7 days. 3 straight with a great chance at 4 straight since Scott has virtually owned Mid Ohio in his career.
2. Nice strong comeback for Helio Castroneves. Helio is leading this championship with consistency and minimal mistakes. But I must say, that may get the job done against RHR who has had a mix of bad luck & driver errors but that is not going to work against Scott Dixon. Helio is going to need to win to beat Dixon for this title. And if there's one place Helio does not want to go to against a Hot Scott Dixon, its Mid Ohio. Helio will need to capitalize at Sonoma where Penske has held a clear advantage (but will his teammate allow that?) and Fontana (where Chevy at the moment holds a clear advantage on ovals).
3. Thank you to IndyCar for doing the standing start on Sunday after the Saturday mess. That was the right move and thank you for doing it. Now it would've been nice for the TV viewers had the NBCSN camera guys removed their heads from their asses because I dont know what they were thinking. They start from behind and then completely turn away from the action at the front and show a side view of what appeared to be Ed slow and virtually captured nothing. NBCSN has done a great job all across the board but they fumbled the ball on that. The front view from turn 1 was the perfect camera angle and would have given the viewers a great shot of the action but we barely got to see it with the poor camera work from NBCSN. Other than that, the coverage was absolutely phenomenal and Matchett was golden in the booth again.
4. Major props to Bourdais for another podium in the Dragon machine and without P2P. If that doesnt take a highly skilled effort from a highly skilled driver, then I dont know what does. Credit to Jay as well for trying to make some changes and they have worked so far.
5. Power from the very little of the standing start we got to see was an absolute animal (Helio too). Ive said since watching Power in his Champ Car days, this man is the king of standing starts. He is a complete animal on those things and every driver should fear Will on standing starts if he's around them. The last restart Will unfortunately got loose and collected RHR. It happens and thats the nature of double file restarts. Bourdais made a nice outside overtake of Will and it looked like Will just straight got loose trying to come back. These machines are tough around these streets. Unfortunate for RHR but he also should share a little blame IMO because there was no reason for him to try and force 3-wide in that corner which was not going to work. And it didnt.
6. Its funny because I think we got quite the opposite of what we expected. Race 1 was an aggressive race filled with contact. Race 2 was a much smoother, safely driven race (until the final restart). I think we all expected that to be reversed.
7. Props to Mike Conway on a pair of 7th place efforts when the Coyne car clearly wasnt very strong all weekend. Even more stunning for Race #2 considering he started next to last.
8. Good job for Carlos Munoz. Hopped into the car without preparation and drove a clean-smooth race and brought it home 15th (-1 lap) which is actually about where that car runs with every driver they put in it. The thing thats impressed me about Munoz in his 2 starts is his patience. He's not making desperate ill advised moves like most rookies do. That will go far in his chances at a 2014 seat which he deserves IMO. People had high expectations for him in this race. I didnt. 1) No preparation, 2) a team he doesnt even know, 3) that team is Panther, 4) he's racing against MONSTERS on these streets. 15th place and finishing the race clean in those circumstances impressed the hell out of me. Nice job, kid.
