  • John Andretti for the 500

    http://www.nationalspeedsportnews.co...-set-for-indy/

HARRISBURG, N.C. — It appears John Andretti, Richard Petty and Andretti Autosport will work together to file an entry for the 100th anniversary Indianapolis 500.

The group, along with representatives of Window World, which has sponsored Andretti in the Indianapolis 500 in recent years, has scheduled a press conference during IndyCar Series testing Monday at Barber Motorsports Park to unveil what is being called a fifth Indianapolis 500 entry for Andretti Autosport.

Andretti finished 30th last year at Indianapolis, driving a Window World-sponsored entry fielded in a joint effort by the King of stock-car racing and Andretti Autosport, which is owned by John Andretti’s cousin Michael.

Andretti will be a teammate to Danica Patrick, Marco Andretti, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Mike Conway.

Andretti, who turns 48 March 12, has made 11 starts in the Indianapolis 500 with a best finish of fifth in 1991.

Love it! John is under-rated as a talent, and I love seeing a guy that has driven a 240 mph turbo-powered beast still compete. It's kind of amazing really that the guy has been doing really longer than any other current open wheeler.

From Sneva33, here is John racing car in 1987!!!

I don't dislike John Andretti at all and glad to see another car with decent sponsorship, but I looked at his Indianapolis 500 stats and he personifies "also-ran" status. 11 starts, 2 laps led, average starting spot is 18.6, average finish is 17.7. He basically has passed less than one car in 11 starts based on the stats.
I was a little bit demoralized on the last laps, but I saw on the last lap that he was driving a little bit carefully, and I thought I might be able to surprise him. It was risky, but it worked." --Alex Zanardi, 09/08/96

Sure, I agree in part. However, he has never really had a decent car. You need to also look at his teams. He won for Hall/VDS against the best of the best in the height of CART and while running for Yarborough and Petty won NASCAR Cup races (Cale's ONLY win as an owner). He has also won IMSA races including the 24 Hour of Daytona.

John chose a different path than some at a great cost to winning. He is undeniably a good racer though.

              FYI, teams driven for....
              Curb (non-winner)
              Granatelli (non-winner)
              Porsche (development team)
              Hall/VDS (won a race)
Foyt (Was pretty bad in 1993 and this was a T car)
              Panther (One-off)
              Roth (One off)
              D&R (One off)
Andretti/Petty (again, he was following Kanaan through the pack last year when E J Viso nailed him on the front stretch ruining the suspension. Granted, John nearly killed them both on the backstretch in retaliation, but Viso honestly almost put John over the pit wall. It was equal or worse than Salazar in my book.

Glad to hear it. John's one of the nicest guys you'll meet and a fan favorite at Indy for the Month of May. Happy he'll be part of the Centennial!

John is a decent shoe. He is a local guy, loves Indy, and really seems to appreciate the opportunity to race there. Good luck to John!!

If John and Davey can come race for the 100th, I'd like to see a couple other older shoes try as well, like Buddy Lazier. Would love to see him drive the second Panther car again and see what he can do (The other rideless guys are going somewhere else I feel). John's awesome by the way.

Who didn't see this post coming on TF? Anyone? Anyone?

I agree with the sentiment that John Andretti is one of the nicest also-ran drivers in Indy 500 history. If he can make the field - good on him.

I'm not usually in the arguments for more American drivers. I think the Kanaan types and others go somewhere else. We could put in Alex Lloyd there too, I'm cool

Nothing wrong with another car going for it all. Good luck John.
