  • Boneheaded Gimic or Not

Should the last race be used for a promotion like the one planned. It's a great idea but IMO not at the last race where there could (should) be a championship at stake which ideally should be the bigger deal anyway. Now you have the potential to have a 1 race deal that interferes with drivers trying to win the championship. What happens if they take a contender or 2 out? Can you say bonehead!

Pretty simple question. (Is it a) bonehead idea for (the) last race Y = yes N = No

    This is almost scary.

    N

I voted "Y" for "Yes" for using the last race for promotion. I think it's time to take some chances. Doing it at the last race means there will be some talk about it all season long, and gives any would-be interlopers time to prepare.

A championship-spoiling circumstance is possible anytime, anywhere, if the competition is close. I doubt any unsuitable drivers will be getting in the way as a result of this effort.

I think your opening question is in conflict with the title question, though - I would guess many will vote "N" for "Not a boneheaded gimick".

((sigh)) I thought people like Dario and Will and the others were professional drivers. If they can't deal with other drivers then get off the track.

        I voted N

Gimmick this season and conclude with a double header next season. Let people see how good the racing can be at Vegas and then throw in the road course? Hell yeah.

I voted N thinking it meant 'not a boneheaded gimmick.' In other words, I like the idea. Looking at your thread title and then the first sentence of your post, I'm now not really sure what N and Y really mean

If NASCAR would've done something like this they would be laughed off the planet by this forum.

By some members, yes. Not by you, and not by the others who have similar feelings. Still others don't really give a hoot.

Gimmick. "Invitee" with little experience in this chassis/series, in the last race of season with in all likelihood the championship at stake....a mistake by an "invitee" that takes out a championship contender would be a disaster.

No. 2011 is a season of hardly any consequence competition-wise. Spoiler alert- red cars will cover the first 7 spots in the championship. Come on, look at who is on the sideline. The importance of the 2011 season is to gain momentum and money for 2012 when we have product that will be worth something. If we have to resort to gimmicks, we have to resort to gimmicks.

That's my problem with the promo. Also, there are other safety issues.

So based on your logic should only the cars still in championship be allowe to race the last race? Only the full time entries? Only guys who have previously raced INDYCARs?

Where do you draw the line in the sand?

I'm quite certain if guys who have never raced an INDYCAR previously wanted to participate, they would be required to pass a test just like anyone else.

We want to encourage new participation in this sport, no matter which race it is. We need new teams, drivers with fan bases, sponsors that activate, etc.

The sport doesn't have the luxury of being picky at the moment, obviously the exception being someone who is completely unsafe on the track. And unfortunately as far as that goes, poor precedents have been set - e.g. Roth & Milka.

I don't know if you are asking is this a "bonehead gimic or not?" or "Should the last race be used for a promotion like the one planned?"

Should I have answered your thread title or your post?

With 73% of the forum saying "no" (I'm guessing that means it's not a dumb gimmick) - I think we have the forum's answer.
