  • Interesting article from Canada

I saw this article linked through PT's twitter:

The main new thing that I noticed in reading that article that I do not remember seeing anywhere else was this line:

One other new attraction that fans attending the race can look forward to is the use of four new LED scoring monitors that INDYCAR is taking to street and road races this season. These towers will supplement the Jumbotrons at the track by providing real-time scoring information for spectators.
Seems like a pretty good idea. I wonder how big they are?

    That's excellent!

RB talked about this in another interview a while back. There was some other stuff he discussed, like a fancier stage for driver intros... but he does so many interviews I can't remember where I saw it.

I think the portable scoring pylon idea was his. He walks around the venues and takes everything in, trying to see things from the fan's perspective. He's not in the paddock with his race team (ahem, ahem... cough, cough).

      It does make a difference.

My guess would be, and would make the most logical sense, would be the length of a tractor trailer....53 feet. Would be one piece and just raise it into place. However, that kinda seems too easy after thinking about it.

I think Randy said they spent 750K bucks on that stuff, but well worth it.

I think that is an awesome idea. Instead of trying to follow the scrolling banner on a jumbo tron, you can simply look to the pylon like at an oval and see that the #7 car is in 18th place immediately. Having 3 or 4 placed in good spots around the track will be cool.

They bought 4 scoring pylons that will be at every road/street course events and 2 Jumbotrons that will follow the series around as well. The 750k is just for the sound equipment.

For instance, one thing I'm going to do this year, is when you go to a speedway and you want to see who's in what position, you look at the leader pole. It's right there in front of everybody to see and it's great. But if you go to road or street course, there’s not always one around. You just have video boards to go from and those can show a million different things throughout the day. I'm making four leader poles that will be 14 feet high, that we’ll be able to put primarily at road and street courses that we’ll be able to put where the crowds are, so fans will be able to see who is winning and what's going on at all given times.

I'm also putting two more jumbo video screens at every event. We're putting in $750,000 worth of enhancements to sound at events. I’m working on a driver intro stage that’s 16 feet high so that it's overwhelming.
