  • Do you feel the Indycar rules should be available to fans?

Considering the controversy of some of the calls from last year and continuing a poll from the DF forum do you feel that the rules for the IndyCar series be available for fans. This is a followup to a question that came up on Race Hub last night where Mike Helton was asked the same question and in a nut shell stated "Our rules are only provided to those who we regulate".

    The poll is expired.

Complete transparency is necessary. Publish them. I know they run the risk of continuous criticism by a handful of fringe nutjobs, but they get that anyway. Do not leave any gray area. The fiefdom mode of doing business by Barnhart and others that has characterized the recent past must be eliminated. Once published, enforce them even-handedly.

I think the complete rules governing the construction, dimensions, and weight of the cars, plus a complete rule book covering all aspects of the races themselves should be published online. Racing rules should be set well before the first race of the season, and not changed during the season without dire need. And it would be good for long term stability to have the general rules governing races to remain stable over the years. Car construction rules should be set no later than July 1 of the previous year, and not be changed during the season unless some major safety issue arises.

This is about showing publicly that there is a level playing field, that it is an honest game, and that officials are not enforcing what they think is right at the moment, but what is in the rule book which everyone can read. In any controversy or dispute, the question should be, "what does the rule book say?", not, "what do the the officials think is right or fair?".

Absolutely. For someone like Barnhart to enforce a rule like they had at Edmonton and no one know about it besides the drivers in inexcuseable. Transparency is needed without a doubt.

I've been wondering if they are going to keep the Edmonton rule or not going forward. I haven't heard anything about it. Randy says he listens to the fans, well, I haven't seen the fans react more unanimously and emphatically to anything more than they did for that. By all measures the ruled should absolutely be axed. I suppose it won't matter if they decide to go to double file restarts on road courses, though.

I'm curious too especially with the new track layout. I hope that rule becomes extinct.

Because I think that it is important that IndyCar be more transparent than NASCAR to it's fans I am going to give this poll one bump. Thanks for the patience.

I would like to see the rules of competition made available to the fans so they can more easily enjoy the sport.

I would also like for Mr. Barnhart to take a 100 question exam on the subject and have the result made available to the public.

No way they get published before Barnhart is gone. That would cut into his power.

If anything, it would keep him honest.

Most other major sanctioning bodies make their rules public. The ACO, FIA, and RallyCar Series I know do. If Formula 1 isn't intimidated by making their sporting and technical regulations public, why should INDYCAR be? It does look like the rulebook will at least be released to the media for 2011. I'm hoping they also release it to the public as well.

Maybe could be a perk for IndyCar Nation Champions?

Instead of Yes and No, I think the 2 choices should be Yes and HELL YES!.

I voted yes. What legitimate purpose is served by keeping them a deep dark secret? Man up and make them public.
