  • New Edmonton Layout

Ive been very critical of this circuit, for how horrible the racing has been. When i look at it, I think a big part of the problem was the track layout. It was all speed and there was no heavy breaking zones. Which is why i think the Penske/Ganassis occupied the entire top 5 the last two years. Because they obviously have better speed than anyone else. With this new layout, i think the racing will improve. The course is more technical, with two really good passing zones that have heavy breaking involved. It should be alot racier.

Now if they could just convince Barber to put a passing zone on his track and dump Mid Ohio and Sonoma for Cleveland and Road America, we are in business.

The reason why Penske and Ganassi have dominated is because they have employed the best drivers as opposed to pay drivers. The old Edmonton track was a drivers track that really tested your mettle! It easily separated the talent from the non talent. It was a tough, demanding track. You need look no further then how worn out the drivers are when they got out of the cars at the end of the race. I hope the new track hasn't lost that.

I found the layout of the old Edmonton track but I wish someone could do an overlay to compare the differences between the two tracks.

Sonoma yes - Mid Ohio no. Mid Ohio always draws a huge crowd for the Indycar Series and the Mid Ohio weekend is probably one of the best race day weekends in North America. American Le Mans, World Challenge, various open wheel series, and Indycar - nothing can match this this type of entertainment for the prices they promote the races for.

I like it, but I can already see the inevitable controversy: the final turn is similar to the final turn at Sao Paulo, where the trailing car has a big advantage. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, since the leader could pick (and hold) their preferred line and make the trailing car take the longer way around, but, well ... yeah.

That said I do like it, and I think it'll be an exciting, entertaining race, just like Sao Paulo was last year.

I never said the track wasnt tough, i said the racing was horrible on it. It was a parade not a race. Same with Mid Ohio, it draws great crowds, me wanting it dropped was based on the racing and how bad it is there. The track was built for sports cars not IndyCars.

Looks like good views as well. You could park your..ah cooler in the grandstand and see the whole course. It looks fast to me

Will grandstand 12 have to be moved?

Here's both the new and old layouts on top of each other.

Running Counter-Clockwise the fight for the hairpin on final lap should be fierce, if a certain someone will allow a fight. I really like the layout and agree with Stickman, it is similar to some designs we amateurs did except they used only the runway and we used runway and taxiway. Should be a great race!

Man, that seems somewhat wild to me when you look at the part of the runway where cars will be going in opposite directions at each other.
