  • DVD player tip

Here's the story: I just bought a new DVD player, an LG BD-590. To my knowledge, it is the only player on the market today that is Blu-Ray with a built-in WiFi connection as well as an internal 250g hard drive. The machine outputs 1080i over HDMI. The price fell after Christmas - I bought mine from Best Buy for $250 and you can find them for a bit less on eBay.

Software comes with it that connects this machine to your PC and home network.

What makes this so cool is that you can access YouTube and with a little work, save it into the internal memory and play it later with no buffering and stalls. There are tons of old racing videos available, some of them of surprisingly good quality.

    Gentlemen, start your Wifi!

For some reason Blu-ray recorders are not sold in the USA or Canada, but are in most of the world. They would be great.

Blu-Ray blank disks are brutally expensive, still close to $20 each.

I just use my PS3 to play movies and to connect to Netflix. I really, I don't watch that much regular TV so the dvr built into my Direct TV box has been plenty.

I was in Japan last week and they've dropped to $6-7 there.

I've got an old G4 Powermac hooked up to my LCD TV using an HDMI cable for video (via a DVI-to-HDMI adapter) and RCA cables for audio (via a headphone jack/RCA Y-cable). Great way to watch internet video content without buying any new hardware. There's some cool software out there that lets you control the mouse functions and type via the touchpad on the iPhone, and Apple has an app to control iTunes on any computer on the same wifi network using the iPhone.

There is also great, I mean great software for encoding, post-processing also. As long as one is able to connect thier computer video to HDTV, possibilites are endless.

htpc is the way to go in my book.

                  Upscaling DVD to 1080p

Get one for your computer, the right decryting software(Not that I;'m advocating it) and a 2TB hard drive you're set to go for awhile.

The problem I've had is this whole 5c copyright stuff. Basically, not allowing my PC to record off the Comcast box cable HDTV channels.
