  • Fan vote on the greatest 33

From a Speedway press release. This ought to start a bigger war of words than the split.

Indianapolis 500 fans worldwide have debated for decades about which drivers are the greatest in the race's glorious history.

Now those voices will be heard and counted.

"The Greatest 33" fan interaction platform will give fans around the globe the opportunity to pick their dream all-time starting lineup of 33 drivers for the Indianapolis 500 online at thegreatest33.com from mid-March until early May. The top 33 drivers, based on fan input, will be announced in early May as "The Greatest 33."

Fans are encouraged to visit thegreatest33.com now to register for early admission to the site before driver selection opens officially in mid-March. The site currently provides a video glimpse of some of the most historic highlights in Indianapolis 500 history.

"There have been 732 drivers to race in the Indianapolis 500 since the inaugural event in 1911, so it's going to be quite a fun challenge for fans from around the world to select 'The Greatest 33,'" said Jeff Belskus, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation president and chief executive officer. "We're really excited about this program and its website, which will be an informative, interactive focal point."

Fans will choose their Greatest 33 from a list of 100 drivers pre-selected by an esteemed panel of international motorsports media. Images, statistics and audio from IMS Historian Donald Davidson will be available for each of the 100 candidates, providing hours of entertaining content and helping fans make those tough final picks.

Fan voters will randomly have the opportunity to win prizes available at thegreatest33.com during the voting period. Fans also can share their personal Indianapolis 500 experiences and memories, including their thoughts about various drivers, at the site and easily share those messages through popular social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

"The Greatest 33" is a key fan interaction component of the 100th Anniversary Indianapolis 500 celebration. "The Most Important Race in History" is scheduled for Sunday, May 29 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

$5 says all 3 winning Unsers get into the greatest 33.
Insert something witty here. I don't care.

I have a felling the list will be a joke.
It'll be heavily weighted with modern drivers.
How many people would actually vote for Louis Meyer? yet he is one of the top 10 drivers to ever run the speedway.

The video on the site sure gave me goosebumps. It should be great once the site is fully up and running.

Signed up; anyone who is a 3 or 4 time winner is a member of the 33 club in my book...the rest, well, that'll get sticky...

wonder if they'll even have any non-winners on the list that I might vote for?

And the FIRST guy to ever do it deserves in too. Ray needs to be in the Top 33.

                    1-Time or Non-Winners?
                    Mario Andretti for sure
                    Michael Andretti?

I think all 2 time winners make it, but I'll go against CamKing... Will Dario make it? Will there be a "current driver" bias to respect the "real drivers"....

does anyone know where we can get the list of all the living 500 drivers who are invited to the race this year?

would be awesome for some fan (with lots of free time!) who could write a little one-sentence "where are they now" for each one of them

Awesome. I did my Top 33 last years. Of course, it wasn't all about winning, it was about being a big part of the race. That's why the legendary Jim Hurtubise nabbed spot #33 in my field.
