well for me...it was disappointing, especially after Wheldon admitted he should have gone harder at the end to try and catch Franchitti....2009 was also a bit boring, watching Helio pretty much dominate the final laps. 2008 was similar with Dixon dominating late...the highlight that day was Danica storming down to confront Briscoe (say what you want but she had every right to be p***ed off). 2007 was cool b/c of the storm approaching, and who would/would not pit as a result. If I remember correctly Danica would have been the leader had the storm held off for about 10 or so more laps. 2006 was awesome for obvious reasons (other than the oppressive heat, we sat in Turn 4 upper deck so at least we had a breeze...got scorched that day.) 2005 was cool b/c of Danica leading late.
Don't get me wrong, I did mention DP a lot, but she's not my favorite driver. I just know that her winning the 500 would be a huge story, something for the nation to latch on to. That seemed to happen in 2005 but it's worn off as she hasn't contended for a win since at the 500. She's had some great finishes (3rd in 2009, 6th in 2010, 8th in 2007, 4th in 2005...) but she's never seriously contended for the win since 2005....Danica is the most recognizable person in IndyCar by a mile...even Helio, while well known, isn't DP (let me know when he has 2-3 years when he stars in Super Bowl commercials, however tasteless I find them)
Yeah the last few years have been yawners to a degree toward the end...and I know not every race can be 2006 or 1992, but the dominance of Penske/Ganassi has gotten stale. Hopefully someone rises up to challenge them in the coming years
I felt like the ABC crew did a far-above-average job (for them) of building up the drama of the fuel conservation battle over the final stint. Far more engaging than similar situations recently such as Barber last year and Homestead in 2009. But I can imagine that it would have been less exciting from the track if you had no access to commentary (don't know how Mike King sounded, usually I listen to him and watch Race Control, then watch a recording of the TV broadcast a few days later). Regardless, I think its kind of ironic, in a good way, that the ABC crew managed to create (for me at least) a more absorbing drama than probably would have been gained from actually being there. Which I will (be there live) for the first time this year. So what do I know?
wow Mike I didn't notice that was you the first time...yeah...that had to have been a roller coaster of a heartwrenching day for you guys...I would have loved to see a DFDR car win....
We'll have to see how they do with TK in the cockpit this year! If they can have that good of a car again matched with TK, they've got a chance in the fight.
I wonder that, too. I've heard he may have been in trouble, but just as I've often I've heard he had enough at that point to make it.
Wheldon could have stood on the gas and forced the issue, he was not far away at the time of the Conway crash. Plus Dario was off the gas letting slow lap cars pass him into turn 1.
"Paff has been closer to the mark than anyone will give him credit for."

"Paff is far more right than any of you will EVER give him credit for.
As non politically correct and un IndyCar friendly as it is, it's the truth. "
simply put, I think the statistic of the winner of the 500 will probably go on to win the championship is also getting stale. that has happened every year with the exception of helio and buddy's wins.

Getting stale? If it happens, it happens. Also, "happened every year except Helio and Buddy?" If you randomly pick 2004 as your starting point, yeah...but if we look at 96+:
I was at the race, it was the first time I actually sat and watched the whole race through. In person, Dario looked even more dominating than on the broadcast.
I did not really mean to start a discussion on the race itself. I am just jonesin' for the season to start and it was the only race I still had on DVR.
