  • First Annual Saudi Women's Grand Prix

This is kind of wacky--a petition for the First Annual Saudi Women's Grand Prix:

Looks like some creative political theater to bring attention to women's rights in Saudi Arabia, but look at the list of "Principle Signatories!"

Included is our own Janet Guthrie, "First Female Driver in Indianapolis 500 and Daytona 500, International Women's Sports Hall of Fame." Also some other guys.

Here's a link to a radio interview on PRI's "The World" with the guy who's organizing it:

Maybe they will have mercy and only stone them
For the record, I never had a problem with CART in 1995. Its when they turned beligerant twards IMS and their fans for supporting the IRL that turned me off them.

Do they put the burka over their helmets? Dump of a country.

I saw a piece on this about a year ago - I forget where. There is apparently a small but thriving amateur racing scene in the kingdom, and a few women regularly participate.

I hope the winner doesn't get on their knees and try to kiss the bricks, er , sand. That type of display will get you imprisoned.

The problem with a racing series based in a desert country is that at most tracks... the finish line keeps shifting.

"Ooh woo, I'm a Rebel just for kicks, now
I been feeling it since 1966, now..."

They may not be relevant to most TF members, but women's rights are no laughing matter. That being said, this is obviously a publicity stunt, and IMO not the best kind...

After a lifetime of supporting causes (civil rights, voting rights, gay rights, women's rights etc.) but usually not getting involved because of the nature of the demonstrations or the perceived character of the demonstrators, I've come to realize that any activity is better than inactivity. I've signed the petition.
