  • Racing Fever

I know that the offseason has been going on for awhile, but man, this racing fever I have is at its highest right now. I'm just so excited about this next race season and I am especially looking forward to this May. I am currently a student freshmen at IUPUI so this will be my first year to go to the track for all of the practices and qualifying. I just want to know how does everyone else get through these offseasons? What is something that you do to get ready for the next season? One thing that I have done is I have already been to the museum a lot and I always want more. I just want to know what everyone else does here?

Man, I hear ya. Winter's a rough time. I would check out the IndyCar videos on YouTube, chat it up on Twitter/Facebook with some of the drivers and other personnel, scan the newswire and blogs, and maybe even catch something on RaceFansTV.

Aside from that, we talk. And wait.

Pretty much all of the above plus football and hockey will get me through. The Daytona 24 is soon. Although the DP slugs sicken me, I will watch it ... well, because it's the Daytona 24, and I know a lot of folks who will be competing.

Old races on YouTube, WTCC/DTM/F1 replays on Speed, Monster Trucks every morning at 7:00 ET and every night at 5:00 ET on Speed. Rally America starts in a week up in my locale. Trackforum is also a more-than-once daily address I visit.

The old races on YouTube are actually a good way to go...If you like to feel nostalgic. You have to be careful not to get caught up in all of the carnage videos, a lot of the comments are tasteless.

rFactor computer Sim IndyCar mod. I drove the Sao Paulo street course last night and hit everything but the pace car...and that's only because the race has a standing start in the game.

This week I will be driving DP's at Daytona to get all pumped up for the 24. Chili Bowl will be shown on tape delay in a couple of weeks...there's plenty to do.

If you are a student at IUPUI, the School of Liberal Arts is starting a Motorsports Studies program. Among courses taught by Donald Davidson and Pete Hylton, there is an Introduction to Motorsports Studies course that begins next fall in the School of Liberal Arts (all aspects of motorsport other than engineering).

I can't wait till iRacing has a mac client. They say it's because the video cards have to be high performance, but thats BS, my machine IS high performance.

Here's how I cure the racing bug - Thursday night indoor karting league at http://flwbindoorkarting.com/

For those who are in Indy, not as fun as a league but still a good way to scratch the itch http://fastimesindoorkarting.com/

In March I will go to the Indy Supercross race

As an IndyCar fan, you can also kill some time and be productive while doing it while writing sponsors. ABC Supply, Firestone, IZOD, Dad's Root Beer, Z-Line, HP, Venom Energy, Verizon, Dollar General, Target, Service Central, Starwood Hotels, all of IndyCar's associate sponsors, whoever Simona's sponsor is announced as next week--write 'em a letter or email and let them know you appreciate them, and how it impacts your purchasing habits and loyalty.

if you really want to be up on some solid 500 history there's lots of great books to read; my favorites-

Donald Davidson's History of the Indianapolis 500
wilbur shaw's Gentleman Start Your Engines
                          Go! The Bettenhausen Story
and the two new books (though they are primarily picture books) from IMS are cool too ; Indianapolis 500 and Indianapolis Motor Speedway ($20 each on amazon)
"Charging a man with murder here was like handing out speeding tickets at the Indy 500."- Capt. Willard, Apocolypse Now
"Ain't nuthin' like [being with a woman], 'cept maybe the Indy 500."- Bunny, Platoon
"To alcohol! The cause of- and solution to- all of life's problems."- Homer J. Simpson

Writing the sponsors is a great idea that all of us should do. And thanks for the list of books. That was something I meant to ask about in my original post. Something else I have been doing is playing the old Indy Car 2005 game on the xbox and I have been playing gran tursimo 5 for the PS3. Man I wish there was a new video game.
