  • Villenueve offered ride at Lotus, turned it down (merged)

Looks like Villneuve was offered a Lotus ride...

Villeneuve has rubbished speculation that he turned down an opportunity to rejoin the grand prix grid with the newly-renamed Lotus Renault GP outfit next season. A French-Canadian radio commentator has claimed that following a visit to Lotus’ Norfolk headquarters late last year for discussions with his friend Gino Rosato, the 39-year-old was offered a KV Racing Technology IndyCar Series drive in the legendary British sports car marque’s iconic green-and-yellow livery, with the carrot of an F1 seat in 2011.

“That was never discussed,â€‌ the 1995 IndyCar Champion told Quأ©bأ©cois publication Rue Frontenac. “There was never any discussion of F1. Everyone knows how hard I worked on my return to F1. If the only thing I needed to do was spend a year in IndyCar, I would have done it! The truth is that F1 only came into the plans of Lotus Cars in the last few months.

“It’s true that we talked about Indycar, but Takuma Sato had already been hired as their first driver and I was asked to bring some of the budget that my partners at the time wanted to invest for F1. It was not an option.

“IndyCar and the Indy 500 – I’ve already done that, and that was before the separation, when the series was more competitive. If I have to bring a budget, it will be for a new challenge like NASCAR, not to go back to something I have already ticked off and achieved.â€‌

“F1 was not in our plans when I spoke to Jacques about IndyCar,â€‌ concurred Rosato, who following a long career in the top flight with Ferrari, was instated as Lotus’ vice-president of corporate affairs. “I would have loved for him to race with us. In my head, Villeneuve and Lotus was a natural fit, but the planets were not aligned.â€‌

Why would he want to return to F1 then? Has he not already been there and done that too?

        Keep JV away.

He left on a sour note. Hell, a sour symphony. He's been trying to shake off bad career moves since his last championship. It's a shame. He was so good up until 1999, too.

Ugh! Go away Jacques! You were once my favorite driver but the reality is you are washed up despite the fact you think you still deserve a top F1 ride.

JV and SS have to be related in some way. Not saying SS has JV's talent. There attitudes and the way they come off are exactly the same. An attitude that rubs you the wrong way or at least me. Go getem openwheelers.

Actually I'd liken JV's attitude to JP Montoya's. Very similar. Both blasted AOWR on the way out, and have continued to make snide comments.

Yeah. And as a huge fan of his, I can say that confidently. In America now, he is no more well known than any current USAC stars. You have to remember his success here came near 16 years ago....

Go talk to casual fans, and you'll know I'm correct. He has chosen NOT to flaunt his Indy 500 ring and champ trophies.

JV is set on F1 and NASCAR. This was never anything more than verbal squabble. Totally a non-story.

I would someday like to see JV back after winning the 24 hours at Le Mans so he can get the Triple Crown.

S***, most casual fans don't know anything else exists besides NASCAR. And even then, they don't know anything more than Dale Jr., Gordon, Johnson, Busch, Hamlin, Harvick, and Martin [of modern drivers]...if that.

How can you tell he was raised in Europe............

Most Canadians don't have that snivelling, arrogant attitude. Sometimes, I'm ashamed to say he is from canada with his attitude.

But would I like to see him try IndyCar, f'n right I would!

Honestly, I don't think JV himself wants to run OW on ovals again. And in his statement he flat out said it was IndyCar for one year, before I guess being allowed to join Lotus-Renault F1. People complain about Hornish not wanting to be here, how about that one?

He would gain nothing in coming to Indycar. The "talent" in the field is not recognized all over the world. If he would win, people would say that he won against average drivers, not the best in the world( I disagree). If he loses against them, people will say he's not talented anymore.
