  • A New Big Oval designed specially for INDYCAR

Lets say the things go up from now at much faster rate than anybody can imagine. A necessity for a new modern super speedway arises as a part of the New Triple Crown (or lets call it the Chase Crown, because its going to have at least 5 big 500 mile races).

So what should it look like: D-shaped (Daytona type), rectangular (Indy type), tri-oval (Pocono type), roval, two turn (Motegi/Milwaukee type), without straights (Langhorne type)?
    What about banking?
    Length (at least 2 miles)?
Speeds? I mean designed specially for example 250-260 mph speed range with all necessary safety features. Can we hit 300?
What should be the top speed, the speed in turns? Heavy braking, flat-out oval or something in between?
Race distance? At least 500 miles, what about 600, or even 1000 mile race?
    Surface (asphalt or concrete, dirt??).
    Where should it be?
What about something completely new, crazy and insane? 8-shaped oval, oval with a one right turn (Trenton?? type) ?

The new track should be designed only and specially for INDYCAR.

I'd like to see a 4-mile oval. Figure-8 but the middles don't intersect. After the "normal" corners, it'd just transition into a right-handed, equally banked turn, back into the next left-handed turn.

It'd be like having two big, high-speed, heavily banked S-turns.

Where? Downtown Los Angeles, right next to the freeways so that cars on the freeway could see the cars on the track.

It'd be a night race, with high-speed lighting at the top and bottom of the track, as well as lighting to act as "lanes" similar to how they do at Texas. The cars will also have lights on the nose, edge of the front wing, along the side-pod, engine cover, and rear wings that emit a constant light that corresponds with the color of the car (Target = red and white/white and red, 7/11 = green, Shell = yellow and orange, etc.). As the cars go around the track, the lights embedded into the track will trail each individual car, with the same color the car emits. So as Dixon's red/white Target car runs, the lighting on the track will emit the same color light and run alongside the car. If there's a pack of cars, each "lane" of light will mimic the color closest to it.

The reason for this is because I think the spectacle of racing needs to move forward. Creating a lights show gives something kids can enjoy, aside from just the cars themselves. You now have the cars, and the flashing colors streaming around the track at night. Also, the TV product would look incredible in HD, and even 3D, with these glowing cars - akin to night racing in sportscars.

I got the idea from the most recent Speed Racer film. This application would be to that extreme, but I think adding lights would be a fantastic addition to the spectacle.

Those would be awfully big turns. I think a bit too much sideforce Gs on the driver for that long. To fit in a smaller property, I would go with a 1-1/2 mile Milwaukee track.

Indy Car Racing needs more 1 Mile tracks, not more pedal to the metal type tracks that require zero ability for driving a race car.

I don't know about that, but the bigger tracks need to have less radius in the corners. Basically they shouldn't be racing on NASCAR tracks.

What if we compromise and put Gateway back on the schedule?

IMS could buy Gateway or the remains of Nazareth and rebuild that track...On second thought, if Randy wants to reconnect with the former fans, rebuilding Nazareth and purchasing Gateway would help tremendously.

Or he could just buy a parking lot, since that would provide the same quality racing as Gateway did.

Yeah, it sure did, didn't it? I think Chicago Motor Speedway had better racing...

I remembered this graphic a couple months ago, and decided to play with the idea and some of the possibilities while I was bored in class. I thought the idea of sort of a double oval was pretty sweet, and theres a lot you can do. The following pics are just ideas. IMS is there only for scale, and these are in no shape suggestions to do anything at IMS. I thought about making a thread about these, but it kinda fits in here. All of them would require some form of bridge or tunnel to allow the different parts of the tracks to cross.

I started combining IMS and the Milwaukee mile:

Different variation of what is above

                          another

starting to get a little different

I think this one would be interesting

                          variation again

this ones kind of the odd ball

                          this ones kinda crazy

double pocono? (could be bigger in scale to match the scale of pocono)

Overall, they are all just ideas. The geometries aren't exact, and Im not sure how well some of the ideas would work. I like the basic concept of an 8 turn roval/oval or the double tri-oval as it could combine features of short ovals and huge ovals.

My vote is for something like the double tri oval or something like that. I'd like high speeds, but for the drivers to have to lift. Length over 2.5 miles could be cool. This double oval idea could be cool because it would allow a more compact site so race fans could see the entire track. minimal banking.

My idea for a fun long track has always been a big "paper clip". Think Martinsville in 5x scale. Not for pure speed, but for more dueling into and out of the corners...
