  • SPEED.COM: Indycar, let's get ready to rumble

NASCAR....THIS is how you "have at it".

IndyCar never had a "boys, have at it" policy and their fights are just as legendary. See? Fights are better if they're real (among other things).

....and yes, the IndyCar world is worse off without PT being FT for this very reason.

They picked Tagliani to beat Tracy in a real fight?

They should have included the Johncock-Rutherford battle at Phoenix.

Thanks for sharing that link. I didn't know about many of those. This further confirms that A.J. is a beast.

I hadn't heard the one about him getting attacked by a lion before.

So legends are made. In 1970 book "Incredible AJ Foyt" there were a series of pictures where he played with a real lion, I wouldn't classify that as attacked.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

The man has been nearly drowned, set on fire, rolled off a cliff, smashed against walls, mauled by a lion and attacked by killer bees.

God may be sitting up there going, "Sheesh, what does it TAKE?!?"

Daaaaamn. I think all those "Chuck Norris" jokes everybody used to make really should be about A.J.

You'd think Death's best chance at him is get him when he's not looking. Tried that. Don't work.

Y'all have heard one version or another of this classic, haven't you?

A club racer zigged when he should have zagged, leaving the track and soon thereafter this world. Soon he was before St. Peter, who looked in his book and said "I find your name in here. Welcome, child of God, to Heaven."

The Pearly Gates swung open, and our club racer found himself before the most astonishing of courses, one which with only a flick of the whim could change to any of the world's great racing destinations, and a powerful sports car before him.

"Take it out for a spin," St. Peter smiled.

Our club racer quite happily did, and noticed as he drove he was passing and being passed by the greats of racing history: Oldfield, Shaw, Clark, Fangio, and... a red #14 with a driver whose helmet said "A.J." on the side.

Oh, no, our club racer thought, speeding into the pits where St. Peter waited for him.

"When did A.J. die?" our club racer breathlessly asked.

"A.J. still lives," St. Peter said, "and will for some time."

"But I saw his helmet out there and--"

"Oh, that's God;" St. Peter said, rolling his eyes. "He thinks he's A.J."
"I didn't hear a single comment about airboxes, "carbashians", or how terrible the car looked. I did see dozens and dozens of little kids in awe of the speed and how cool the cars looked. We should learn from our children."
                          --Danny Noonan

It was somewhere in the middle...not really an attack, but it did knock him down. Donald Davidson's take from the 2007 500 program...this was at DuQuoin in 1968:

"...a lion was approaching him from behind. Foyt started to run and the (trained) lion playfully brought him to the ground. For a few seconds, however, and to the surprise of just about no one, the unbelievably competitive Texan appeared to be actually trying to take it on. The trainer hurried over and Foyt retreated, grinning and blushing at having come to terms with the fact that while he was not normally in the habit of backing down, the lion just might have the strength to overpower him. The crowd loved it."
