  • Is there a way IndyCar can copy the Ryder Cup format?

Have 16 drivers involved, 8 on each team over 3 races (ideally a USA v.s. the World type deal).

One race where a team of 2 drivers would share a car in a race v.s. the other 2 drivers sharing a car. You could mandate X amount of minutes for the driver change for everyone if the driver switch is a safety issue.

One race where it's 2 drivers v.s. the other 2 drivers, both driving cars. You could do best average finish, lowest combined time, or only the best individual finish from each team counts.

One race where drivers were paired head to head against another driver to beat. Would make for a lot of storylines. Actually, you could have that competition over the whole season so for example, at one race Hunter-Reay v.s. Tony Kanaan would be for points, the next week at Mid-Ohio Danica v.s. Simona, etc.

You could make the pairings drivers from teams with similar skill, so it wouldn't be Helio representing Team Brazil v.s. Sarah Fisher representing Team USA.

I think that's a way you could drum up interest and get exposure and storylines for teams and drivers, while making it much more interesting than just bringing back the CART-style Nation's Cup.

CART had the "Nations Cup", where each driver represented their own country, example would be that if we had it this year, Australia would win based on the combined points total of Will Power and Ryan Briscoe. IICS should do the same thing, gives fans another thing to pay attention to.

This is not a reason to watch.

The series needs reasons for fans to watch

Cheering for a country on a car... worked wonders for A1GP.

Hate to be Mr. Obvious, but wouldn't this require actually having 8 Americans in the field...

Or are we actually going to go back to hiring drivers based on talent as opposed to what sized check they bring...

I like your idea. In fact, my red car blue car post last week was a bit similar although I credit you for having a better thought out idea. I like it. A team race would be cool. What if they did a relay race with no pit stops except to change car/driver? That might be cool too.

one of the most coveted wins in motocross racing is the annual Motocross des Nations which is held in a different country every year- after years of domination by Belgium and the Brits, the Americans have been the ones to beat for the past 20 years (each team is 3 riders and they each race several times in full motos)- it gets lots of ink and attention in the motorcycle racing world

I thought it was interesting. It was no less arbitrary than anything else we do with points championships, and with a diverse series, its fun to see how it shakes out. Unless you are trying to cover the fact that there aren't many competitive US born drivers. Then its not so good.
