Anyone else hearing rumblings about this?

Sounds like the league has inquired about the condition of the track

I'd be game for an Aussie oval!

Huh. Wonder if they'd run clockwise.

I really don't think that they can go here. Last I heard the track was in direpair and wasing about to be sound off for housing or some other development. I would LOVE to see them here though.

Nothing that millions of $US worth of improvements couldn't fix.

The track is about to undergo extensive improvements. Although Formula One isn't the goal, the owner said Formula One would be able to race there when it's done. I would think that the oval will be taken care of as well and prepared for IndyCar level racing.

FWIW, Randy Bernard said earlier this year that despite Surfer's Paradise not making sense for the series to return to that other venues in Australia were under consideration.

NASCAR ran counterclockwise when it visited in '88.

I think as long as there are two or three Antipodean drivers in the series (driving for the two top teams, no less) any race down there would be a success, provided travel costs were adequately covered.

This is the take from Trackside's Melbourne fan Shane....

Here’s my take on IndyCar racing at Calder Park here in Australia, which you asked about a couple of weeks ago. First you’d have to weed the groove as IMS did after World War II because it hasn’t been used for racing since 2001. The track itself would be close to useable, but the facilities would need a lot of work. The 24-degree banking might be an issue; the transitions from turns to straights would need to be changed to work with Indy cars, and it would need a resurfacing. But the real issue, more than anything else, is the economy isn’t big enough to support it without government support. And the tourism authorities right now are spending their money on sending Oprah and 300 friends here to do some shopping. I’ll tell you what I would do though if I was the promoter: Calder Park’s lighting system is setup to work with the cars running in either direction, so why not run clockwise? Oval Racing: Done Right: Now there’s a gimmick that even Eddie Gossage can’t beat.
As he said, where is the multi-millions coming from for IndyCar travel expenses and sanction fee?
"If your car was a dog, then you had to figure it out and test your own limits. And we didn't go to a wind tunnel – we did it in the first turn at Indianapolis."

Can we re-instate the Miss Indy contest then, finally??

What 'league' are you referring to? Baseball?
And what 'sounds' are you talking about? I don't see a link.

Not to mention that a) the Formula 1 Grand Prix is already in Melbourne (the State govt is not going to stump up for another race) - b) Melbourne was possibly the worst place that Bob Jane could have built an oval as Melbourne is demographically very different from the rest of Australia and is very 'European' in culture. This is one of the reasons the track is such a White Elephant. (had it been built in Queensland/Western Australia/NSW it may have still been operating successfully today)

How about if Indycar got more "umbrella girls" like MotoGP's sponsors send to the tracks ??
