  • Greenlight Diecast 2008

    A few notes:

+1: They've finally retooled their 1:64 cars to actually resemble modern dallaras.

+1: New for 08 are removable cowlings and engine moldings.

-1: No Marco car for 08, but with recycling sponsors, that's to be expected.

-1: Once again greenlight proves its laziness by releasing its current diecasts in time for the 500. They should be available before the green flag drops at Homestead, IMO.

+1: They're using the right "Team Penske" logos on the #3 and #6 this season.

-1: The #3 and #6 are still a boring WHITE.

-1: They couldn't retouch the camera pod to match its real-world counterpart.

-1: for having Sarah Fisher's car and NOT one of the other fullseason drivers'.

-1: for not getting the right numbers after 5 years. Come on, you can't expect me to believe that TK's number REALLY looks like that (I'm nitpicky with details )

-1: for not having a commemorative car for Graham Rahal or other road course cars.

+1: for offering BOTH Meira cars from 07 and 08

+1: for having a Vision car, but...

-1: for not being a current Vision car.

+1: Having a #12 car available.... but its too bad it isn't that beautiful car aowzone designed.

+1: did I mention that they retooled the 1:64 cars?

All in all, a great crop for this season, however with the influx of never drivers it would have been nice to see cars like the #02 McDonalds, #8 Aussie Vineyards, etc., and a retooled Dallara Airbox. Theyre making great strides with removable engine covers, I can't want to see what's in store for next season.

fyi ... some things just are not logistically possible.

it takes about 4 months from start to finish the produce a new version of a diecast.

IMS has available a "limited edition" 1/18 and 1/64th die cast for Danica's first win. They have to be ordered via a 1-800 number from the IMS site. They cannot be ordered from the gift shop. They are to be shipped by late summer.

Why are there still no chevrons on the Penskes?

Probably something to do with not selling toys with tobacco logos on it would be my guess. Phillip Morris likes to err on the side of caution.

I know, I know. Just drives me crazy as a collector. I had Marlboro Penske posters covering my wall as a kid and I never smoked. Oh well.

same here. I always wish they'd paint up the cars to be "Kid-safe" like they did when rusty test drove Sammy's car on the Homestead roval.

I ordered this car just before I read this thread. The car is apparently made by Greenlight.

Does anyone with more knowledge about these things than I know if the Danica car will actually be the current Dallara, or will it have the inaccuracies that fastmaster described?

If it's not coming out until the end of summer, that should give them the four months that C7 says they need. But none of my die casts are from Greenlight, so I'm not familiar with their quality or competence. I know I'm paying less than half of what my other diecasts cost, so I suppose I shouldn't have my expectations too high.

I did the layouts for most of their diecast up until this year. They have in in-house guy now.

What I can tell you is that many teams are still deciding sponsorship and layouts clear into March. As such, its why some cars look different (they tend to change often).

So final art in March + thousands of diecast to be setup (setup meaning paint and tampo production lines), painted/pad printed + shipping = Even the chinese can't handle the extremely quick turnaround needed to satisfy most people. I was always amazed how quick these diecast were produced given the dates we sent off final art (and even then, oftentimes changes were made later which they usually accomodated)

The reason Sarah Fisher get's a diecast and not others is because they wanted to. The team and sponsor have to want to have a diecast made. In Panther's Q&A they state they will only have the 1/64 made if the 1/18th sells well enough. So it's not as much Greenlights decision as sponsors and teams.

It's all part of the big tobacco settlement and the restrictions on advertising as well as marketing towards minors. PMUSA is VERY careful about this, especially regarding things that might be considered to be marketed towards children. Look at the Jim Beam/500 billboard at 16th & Georgetown -- no chevrons on the Penske firesuits OR cars, and that's on what is basically a liquor advertisement.

Another thing I forgot to mention:

                            -1: No "vertical wickers"

There's a decal set for the Penskes to make it right. As said, PM USA won't allow it. They haven't allowed Marlboro either on models or diecasts since the 90s worldwide, unless specifically a promotional item or marked as "For Adult collectable" in very small numbers not sold through usual retail channels.

Player's did the same thing. I have Jacques Villeneuve's 1:18 and it was made only 2000 or 3000 copies worldwide, censored and sold out when released. There was a decal set available at the time.

Schumacher's Ferraris were made in very limited qtys with the logos for companies like Shell for private promotions. When I was in Japan last week, it is pretty clear that decal sets are made for virtually every F1, Indycar, & bike they have ever sponsored by some aftermarket companies out there.

In many cases, the model is designed to be very easily converted with decals or to remove the censored ones.

BTW, the new Greenlights look great.

Is there a Marco road course from 2007 or 2006?
                              And don't forget the heat!
