  • Dario update

Steve Hmiel, the director of competition for Chip Ganassi Racing, said Sunday morning he isn't sure when Dario Franchitti will be able to return as the driver of the No. 40 Dodge.

Franchitti fractured his left ankle in an accident during the Nationwide Series race Saturday. David Stremme will drive for Franchitti in the Aaron's 499 Cup race.

"We're grateful that we have David this weekend," Hmiel said. "After that, we'll see where Dario is, sit down as a group and decide who the best option is going forward."

Franchitti stayed in Talladega Sunday, but he will fly to Indianapolis to see Dr. Terry Trammell, a respected orthopedic surgeon who worked in open-wheel racing for many years.

"He'll fix me up, he's done it before," Franchitti said, according to The Associated Press.

Franchitti told Hmiel he thought he could have raced Sunday, but he will let Trammell determine his status for next weekend's Cup race at Richmond.

"Dr. Trammell is probably the best at patching up stuff like that," Hmiel said. "He can perform miracles it seems like. But you would think an ankle injury like this one would take two of three weeks, maybe more."

The problem for Franchitti is his left foot is the clutch foot, so he has to use that foot every time he shifts gears.

"From experience, unfortunately, I said 'This is broken' as soon as I was hit," Franchitti told AP Sunday, delicately balancing on a set of crutches as he kept his left foot, covered in a cast and bandage, elevated.

"But it could have been a lot worse, and that's the thing. I'm very lucky these cars are as safe as they are."

    --snip--

"We have to look at all out options," Hmiel said. "We may end of picking and choosing a little bit based on the fact that we have to qualify the car at each race."

To say that Stremme's performance made Dario's year-to-date performance look poor would be a huge understatement, wouldn't it? It wouldn't be too big of a surprise if Dario finds himself benched...

Why are you talking about Dario on the IndyCar forum? Last time I looked, this turncoat was a NASCAR driver.
          i love indycars!!!

I suppose there's some irony here in that Dario earned quite a few ICS frequent flyer miles and came out unscathed last year only to have this happen in a "safer" car. Mostly, though, I just hope for a quick recovery for Dario.

A.) Most of us don't consider him a turncoat.

B.) I believe there is a fair chance he won't be a NASCAR driver much longer.

C.) Despite denials, Chip has a couple of very fast backup cars and he has pulled surprises at Indy before. It would not be a giant shock to see Dario in a Target car at the Speedway....

I am no expert but - I would think the clutch effort would be much less in an Indy car and you don't use the clutch once you leave the pits........

Kinda funny that "they" talk about IndyCars being so dangerous, but Dario's two blowovers last year didn't injure him like this wreck did.

For his health (mental and otherwise), he better come back to IndyCar

Dario will not come back to IndyCar IMO. He'll save face by going the ALMS if he does not retire all together.

He left a team, AGR, that stood behind him through the tough times. Then when Dario broke out and turned it around, he left. If there's a ride created on Dario's wish to return, I'm all for. If it's a ride that is now for an up and comming driver with ambitions to run the 500 and Indy Racing, I say too bad to Dario.

I feel the Same for Sam as well. Love to see them return, but not bump someone who really wants to be here in the Indy Series.
