  • "...You know?..." No Danica, I don't know....

I really like her. I like her attitude, her spirit, her talent, and everything she does for IC racing, but PLEASE take a course in public speaking. I could not count how many "you knows" I heard in her interview yesterday. It makes her sound like some of the hoop and ball athletes... and that's not a compliment.

Throwing in a "you know" after just about every sentence sounds as bad as "I seen it", and my all time favorite, ending a sentence with "at". "Where'd you get that, at?" "Where have you been, at?"
(one of the radio guys consistently uses the last )

Thankfully Danica is a decent speaker but she needs to drop all the "you knows". You know?

Like, I mean where did she go to school at?

I know she's an intelligent person, but when she kept using it.....

I hate being critical of her, but does this bother anyone else when our drivers start to sound like some of the other athletes who can't begin to form an intelligent sounding sentence?

(I know I've left myself open for some bashing so feel free to pick apart my writing)

I've never had a microphone shoved in my face after a day in the office so I'll cut the lady a bit of slack. But I think all public figures would benefit from watching a few of their own interviews. Ya know?

Good point. She's on a whirlwind right now, but it made me cringe after the fourth or fifth one.

      And I seen it myself.

I think she used an excess of "You knows" to cover her emotions interfereing with speech. IIRC she doesn't usually seem to pause and search for words like she did yesterday.

She left high school early to go race in Europe. I doubt if she has had any public speaking training. Any athlete should have some training in it. Of course Tony George should take two courses in it!

Sam was (probably still is) a big user of the term "you know". "I mean" is another one you'll hear at the start of a sentence when an player is giving an answer.

It's best just to try to ignore it or else it'll drive you insane. It's kinda like counting the number of times "Mitch" in Dazed and Confused touches the bridge of his nose with his hand. I think I lost count at about 350.

The number of athletes that you could say something along those lines about is too many to even bother caring about. I just hope that you have been just as quick to point that out on say an NBA website.
The number of drivers that say "for sure" a thousand times is just as bad.

Though I agree with Roadster Fan, in Danica's defense I think you should go back and listen to some interviews from 2005 or so. She's gotten a lot better about it, believe it or not.

The absolute worst 'YOU KNOW' abuser in motor sports is Bobby Labonte.
He must use it 2 or 3 times per sentence.

I once counted how many times he said it during an interview and if I recall, the total was somewhere around 28-30 times!

I'd like ALL drivers, no matter which series they compete in, be asked to sit down and watch a copy of themselves being interviewed, not only when their adrenaline is up after a race, but during the downtimes when they are being recorded for sound bytes and whatnot. I believe they would see what we, the television audience notice, when poor grammar and syntax is used, and would make a concerted effort to be aware of not just what they are saying but how it's being said.

I pointed out the hoop and ball guys.

I could care less about the NBA. Besides, didn't about 98% of them have the opportunity to get a FREE education. Most spent at least one year at an institution of higher learning, but decided to waste classes on subjects like basket weaving. The fact that most didn't take advantage of the opportunity they had is sad. Plus, you'd think with even one year of college that they would at least be able to form a sentence. For sure.

By the way, a few years ago Danica went to the Lynn St. James "school" for young gals who wanted to become race drivers. Part of the course was on how to speak in public and to the media. I know she's been schooled in not using slang or crutch terms like we're talking about. I think she should take a refresher course.

Also, I think most anyone who races at a professional level has a higher degree of intelligence than most pro athletes. Therefore, they should know better. ................Where did I get that rational, at?

Like, yeah - it's totally, like, annoying when people put "like" in there to, you know, pad a, like, sentence.

                            You know?
